AVIF to BMP Converter
To convert AVIF to BMP, add your AVIF images, choose BMP and press Convert. The result is an uncompressed bitmap, so expect a file many times larger than the AVIF. BMP has no transparency: those areas are filled with white or the background color you pick. Animated AVIF files give their first frame. The conversion happens in your browser and nothing leaves your device.
- Free, no sign-up
- Your file never leaves your device
- Up to 50 MB per file
BMP is uncompressed, so there is no quality setting.
Your file never leaves your device; images are processed in your browser. EXIF and location data are not added to the output.
How to convert AVIF to BMP
Add your AVIF files
Drag the images onto the upload area or browse for them; you can add several files at once.
Keep BMP as the output
BMP is already selected. For formats with a quality setting the slider starts at a default that suits the format (JPG 90%, WebP 80%, AVIF 60%); lower it if you want a smaller file.
Convert and download
Press “Convert”. Every file is processed in your browser, and you can download the results one by one or as a ZIP.
What is preserved?
Kept
- The image resolution (pixel dimensions)
- The correct photo orientation (EXIF orientation is applied)
- Colors (adapted to sRGB)
Changed
- BMP is lossless, but the loss already introduced by AVIF compression does not come back; the file usually gets larger
Not carried over
- Transparency: BMP does not support it, so transparent areas are filled with the background color you pick (white by default)
- EXIF, location and camera data: left out of the output for privacy
- Motion: only the first frame is converted
When to use it
Use AVIF photos in older Windows tools
Legacy editors, scanning software and in-house tools often read BMP but not AVIF. Converting gives them a file they can open without extra codecs.
Provide raw pixels for processing
Scripts, test rigs and embedded projects sometimes need uncompressed pixel data. BMP is a simple container that is easy to read in any programming language.
Limitations to know
- For animated AVIF files only the first frame is converted.
- Up to 50 MB per file; the output can be at most 16,384 pixels on one side.
- On iPhone and iPad, images above roughly 16 megapixels may not be processed because of a browser limit.
About the formats
What is AVIF?
AVIF is a modern image format based on the AV1 video codec. It delivers very small files at high visual quality, supports transparency, HDR and animation, and is among the most efficient formats for the web. Encoding is slower than for other formats, and some older software cannot open AVIF yet.
What is BMP?
BMP is a bitmap format that stores pixels with little or no compression, so files are large. It is simple and widely supported by Windows software but rarely used on the web; PNG gives the same pixel-exact result in a much smaller file.
Frequently asked questions
Why is AVIF to BMP such a big size jump?
AVIF is one of the most compact image formats, and BMP is not compressed at all. A photo can grow from a few hundred kilobytes to tens of megabytes.
Will the colors change?
The visible colors are copied into the bitmap as displayed. Very fine extra color depth that some AVIF files carry is reduced to standard 8 bits per channel.
Is there a quality option for BMP?
No. BMP stores pixels exactly as they are, so there is nothing to tune; the output reflects the AVIF as it looks now.
Is converting AVIF to BMP free?
Yes, completely free. There is no account, subscription or watermark; just add your files and convert them.
Are my files uploaded anywhere?
No. Images are processed in your browser and never leave your device, so the waiting time depends on the file size and your device. EXIF and location data are not added to the output.
