When to use it
Offices still running Word 2003
Some public offices, expert bureaus and archive units still use Word 2003 or earlier, which may not open .docx files. A DOC version of the UYAP document opens there without compatibility packs or add-ins.
Upload forms that require .doc
Some application, tender and document management systems only accept the .doc extension. Converting the UDF directly to DOC saves you the extra step of going through DOCX first and re-saving the file.
Limitations to know
- For e-signed documents, signature validation does not carry over to the new file; re-sign in UYAP for official use.
- DOC is a legacy format; prefer DOCX for new documents and long-term storage.
About the formats
What is UDF?
UDF is the document format of UYAP (Ulusal Yargı Ağı Bilişim Sistemi), Turkey's national judiciary information system. Lawyers, courts and enforcement offices create petitions, minutes and rulings in this format with the UYAP Document Editor. A .udf file is a ZIP package whose content.xml holds the full text, paragraph and character styles, tables and embedded images. It is unrelated to Universal Disk Format, and Word or PDF readers cannot open it directly.
What is DOC?
DOC is the binary document format that was the default in Microsoft Word 97 through 2003. It stores text, formatting, tables and images in a single proprietary structure. DOCX replaced it in 2007, but DOC is still used because of older Office installations, some organisational systems and upload portals that only accept .doc. Current versions of Word, LibreOffice and Google Docs can open DOC files; DOCX is the better choice for new documents.
Frequently asked questions
Should I convert UDF to DOC or DOCX?
Choose DOCX if you use Word 2007 or later, LibreOffice or Google Docs; it is more widely supported and easier to edit. Choose DOC only when you know the recipient uses Word 97-2003 or the system you upload to accepts nothing but .doc. Both outputs come from the same UDF reader.
Is the output a real .doc or a renamed DOCX?
It is a real Word 97-2003 binary .doc file, produced on our server by LibreOffice's Word 97 export filter. That is why it opens in old Word versions without DOCX support and does not trigger the errors a renamed DOCX would cause in legacy systems.
Can I convert the DOC back into UDF later?
Yes. After editing, use the DOC to UDF converter; the file is converted to DOCX and then to UDF. Before filing it in UYAP, open the result in the UYAP Document Editor to check it and, where required, sign it again with your e-signature.
