BMP to GIF Converter

To convert BMP to GIF, add your BMP files, choose GIF and press Convert. The bitmap's colors are reduced to a palette of at most 256, and the result is compressed, so simple graphics become much smaller files. Photographs may show bands where colors change smoothly. GIF has no quality slider. Everything runs in your browser, and the bitmap never leaves your device.

  • Free, no sign-up
  • Your file never leaves your device
  • Up to 50 MB per file
Output format

GIF uses at most 256 colors, so there is no quality setting.

Your file never leaves your device; images are processed in your browser. EXIF and location data are not added to the output.

How to convert BMP to GIF

  1. Add your BMP files

Drag the images onto the upload area or browse for them; you can add several files at once.

  2. Keep GIF as the output

GIF is already selected. For formats with a quality setting the slider starts at a default that suits the format (JPG 90%, WebP 80%, AVIF 60%); lower it if you want a smaller file.

  3. Convert and download

Press “Convert”. Every file is processed in your browser, and you can download the results one by one or as a ZIP.

What is preserved?

Kept

  • The image resolution (pixel dimensions)
  • The correct photo orientation (EXIF orientation is applied)
  • Colors (adapted to sRGB)

Changed

  • Colors are reduced to at most 256

Not carried over

  • EXIF, location and camera data: left out of the output for privacy

When to use it

Shrink simple BMP graphics

Diagrams, charts and icons saved as BMP by older programs contain few colors. As GIF they become a small fraction of the size with no visible change.

Images for old web pages and devices

Legacy intranet pages, kiosk software and some hardware displays expect GIF. Converting from BMP gives them a format they understand.

Limitations to know

  • Up to 50 MB per file; the output can be at most 16,384 pixels on one side.
  • On iPhone and iPad, images above roughly 16 megapixels may not be processed because of a browser limit.

About the formats

What is BMP?

BMP is a bitmap format that stores pixels with little or no compression, so files are large. It is simple and widely supported by Windows software but rarely used on the web; PNG gives the same pixel-exact result in a much smaller file.

What is GIF?

GIF is an image format from 1987 limited to 256 colors per image. It supports simple on/off transparency and short animations, which is why it is still used for small graphics and looping clips. For photographs it is a poor choice, because the color limit causes visible banding.

Frequently asked questions

Which BMP images convert well to GIF?

Ones with flat areas of color, such as diagrams, interface screenshots and pixel art. Photos and gradients lose smoothness because they need more than 256 colors.

How much smaller does a BMP get as GIF?

A simple graphic often shrinks by 90% or more, since GIF compresses repeated colors efficiently. A detailed photo shrinks less and also loses color quality.

Will the GIF have a transparent background?

No. A BMP has no transparency, so the GIF is fully opaque with the bitmap's own background.

Is converting BMP to GIF free?

Yes, completely free. There is no account, subscription or watermark; just add your files and convert them.

Are my files uploaded anywhere?

No. Images are processed in your browser and never leave your device, so the waiting time depends on the file size and your device. EXIF and location data are not added to the output.
