What is preserved?

Kept

  • How each page looks: text, graphics and images are drawn as in a PDF viewer
  • The page proportions; the pixel size depends on the DPI you choose

Changed

  • Each page becomes a flat BMP picture at the DPI you choose: 72 for screens, 150 as a balance, 300 for print
  • Several pages are delivered together as a ZIP file (page-01, page-02 …); a single page comes back as one image
  • BMP is lossless, so pages at 300 DPI can produce large files

Not carried over

  • Selectable and searchable text: the pages become pictures
  • Links, form fields, bookmarks and other interactive parts
  • Transparency: pages are drawn on white

When to use it

Load a document page into a machine

Engravers, embroidery machines and label printers often import only bitmaps. Converting a page with a design or label from a PDF to BMP makes it loadable.

Pages for legacy Windows software

Old viewers, fax programs and in-house tools may handle BMP but not PDF. A bitmap of each page lets you work with the document there.

Limitations to know

  • Up to 50 MB per PDF and up to 50 pages at a time; choose a page range for longer documents.
  • Password-protected and damaged PDFs cannot be converted.
  • A page larger than about 100 megapixels at the chosen DPI is refused; pick a lower DPI.
  • The PDF is uploaded to our servers and deleted within 30 minutes.

About the formats

What is PDF?

PDF is a document format that looks the same on every device and in print. A page can contain text, vector graphics and images, and a file can have many pages. Converting PDF pages to images turns each page into a flat picture you can place on a website or in a design, while converting images to PDF packs pictures into pages of one document.

What is BMP?

BMP is a bitmap format that stores pixels with little or no compression, so files are large. It is simple and widely supported by Windows software but rarely used on the web; PNG gives the same pixel-exact result in a much smaller file.

Frequently asked questions

How large is one PDF page as BMP?

At 300 DPI an A4 page has about 8.7 million pixels, which comes to roughly 25 MB as an uncompressed bitmap. At 150 DPI it is about a quarter of that.

Does each page have a white background?

Yes. PDF pages are rendered on white, and BMP has no transparency, so every bitmap is fully opaque.

Which resolution should I pick for a machine?

Match the device's resolution if you know it; otherwise 300 DPI gives enough detail for most engraving and printing jobs, at the cost of bigger files.

Is converting PDF to BMP free?

Yes, completely free. There is no account, subscription or watermark; just add your files and convert them.

Are my files uploaded anywhere?

Yes. This conversion runs on our servers, so your PDF is uploaded over an encrypted (HTTPS) connection, converted there and permanently deleted within 30 minutes at the latest. It is stored under a random code instead of its name, and processing is fully automated. EXIF and location data are not added to the output.
