Convert Markdown to Word (DOCX)
To convert Markdown to Word, upload your .md file and choose Word (DOCX). The Markdown is rendered with GitHub-flavoured extensions first, so headings, bold and italic text, nested lists, tables with borders and links become an editable Word document. Fenced code blocks keep their line breaks in a monospace font, and task-list checkboxes appear as ☑ and ☐ characters.

When to use it
Handing a README to non-developers
Send a GitHub README or technical documentation to a client or manager who does not use Markdown. They get an editable Word document and can review it with comments and track changes as usual.
Turning AI drafts into reports
ChatGPT and similar tools answer in Markdown. Convert the draft to Word with its tables and lists intact, then drop it into your company template without cleaning up asterisks and hash signs by hand.
Moving notes into formal documents
Meeting notes kept in Obsidian or another Markdown app can become minutes or a report: convert them to DOCX and finish the letterhead, signatures and final formatting in Word.
Limitations to know
- Only the .md file is processed; images sitting next to your README or hosted online are not fetched.
- Code blocks have no syntax highlighting.
About the formats
What is Markdown (MD)?
Markdown is a lightweight markup language designed by John Gruber in 2004. Formatting is written as simple symbols inside plain text: # for headings, ** for bold, - for list items and | for tables. Markdown (.md) files are everywhere in GitHub READMEs, technical documentation, note-taking apps and AI assistant output. The most widely used flavour is GitHub Flavored Markdown (GFM), which adds tables, task lists and strikethrough.
What is Word (DOCX)?
DOCX is the default document format of Microsoft Word since Word 2007. It is based on the Office Open XML standard: the file is a ZIP package that stores text, styles, tables, images, headers and footers as separate XML parts. DOCX files open and edit in Word, LibreOffice Writer, Google Docs and Pages, which makes it the most common format for exchanging editable documents. When a fixed layout matters, DOCX files are usually converted to PDF.
Frequently asked questions
Why are the images from my README missing in Word?
Only the .md file is uploaded, and images referenced by a relative path such as ./logo.png or by a web address are never downloaded, so they cannot be embedded. Insert them in Word after converting, or embed them in the Markdown as data URIs (base64); embedded images are carried over.
How do code blocks look in the Word document?
Fenced code blocks keep their line breaks and indentation and are set in a monospace font; inline code is monospaced as well. There is no syntax highlighting. If colourful code matters, format it in Word afterwards or use the PDF output, which renders code blocks on a grey background.
Can I convert the Word file back to Markdown later?
Yes. Use the Word to Markdown converter on the edited DOCX; headings, lists, tables and links are turned back into Markdown syntax. Fonts, colours and page layout added in Word are dropped, because Markdown has no way to express them.
Is converting Markdown to Word free?
Yes, completely free. There is no account, subscription or watermark — just upload your file and convert it.
Is my file safe and when is it deleted?
Your file is transferred over HTTPS and stored on our server under a random code. The upload and the output are permanently deleted within 30 minutes, and the download link only works for whoever holds your unique code.
