ICO to PNG Converter
To convert ICO to PNG, add your ICO files and press Convert with PNG selected. The largest image inside each icon is saved as a lossless PNG, and its transparent background is kept exactly. Icons are small by nature, so expect a PNG of 256 pixels or less rather than a large picture. The conversion runs in your browser, so the ICO never leaves your device.
- Free, no sign-up
- Your file never leaves your device
- Up to 50 MB per file
PNG is a lossless format, so there is no quality setting. File size depends on the resolution and the picture itself.
Your file never leaves your device; images are processed in your browser. EXIF and location data are not added to the output.
How to convert ICO to PNG
Add your ICO files
Drag the images onto the upload area or browse for them; you can add several files at once.
Keep PNG as the output
PNG is already selected. For formats with a quality setting the slider starts at a default that suits the format (JPG 90%, WebP 80%, AVIF 60%); lower it if you want a smaller file.
Convert and download
Press “Convert”. Every file is processed in your browser, and you can download the results one by one or as a ZIP.
What is preserved?
Kept
- The image resolution (pixel dimensions)
- The correct photo orientation (EXIF orientation is applied)
- Colors (adapted to sRGB)
- Transparency (alpha channel)
Changed
- Only the largest size inside a multi-size ICO file is used
Not carried over
- EXIF, location and camera data: left out of the output for privacy
When to use it
Edit an existing favicon
To redesign or touch up a site's favicon.ico, convert it to PNG, edit it in any image editor and convert it back to ICO afterwards.
Reuse application icons in documentation
Software manuals, wikis and app store pages need icons as PNG. Converting the program's ICO gives a clean transparent image for them.
Limitations to know
- Up to 50 MB per file; the output can be at most 16,384 pixels on one side.
- On iPhone and iPad, images above roughly 16 megapixels may not be processed because of a browser limit.
About the formats
What is ICO?
ICO is an icon format that stores several square sizes (for example 16, 32 and 48 pixels) in a single file. It is used for Windows icons and for a website's favicon.ico; when a browser needs a small tab icon it picks the matching size from the file. It supports transparency, but cannot be larger than 256 × 256 pixels.
What is PNG?
PNG stores pixels without loss and supports full transparency, which makes it a good fit for screenshots, logos and graphics with sharp edges or text. The price is size: photographs saved as PNG are usually much larger than the same picture as JPG or WebP. PNG does not store animations.
Frequently asked questions
Can I extract every size from the ICO?
No, this page exports only the largest image in the icon file. That one has the most detail, and the smaller sizes can be produced from it with the resize tool.
Is the conversion from ICO to PNG lossless?
Yes. ICO stores icon images without lossy compression, and the PNG copies those pixels exactly, including partial transparency.
Can I make the PNG bigger than the icon?
You can enlarge it with the resize tool, but an icon of 48 or 256 pixels gets soft when scaled up. If you need a large logo, look for the original artwork.
Is converting ICO to PNG free?
Yes, completely free. There is no account, subscription or watermark; just add your files and convert them.
Are my files uploaded anywhere?
No. Images are processed in your browser and never leave your device, so the waiting time depends on the file size and your device. EXIF and location data are not added to the output.
