Convert HTML to Markdown
To convert HTML to Markdown, upload your .html or .htm file, choose Markdown (MD) and convert. You get GitHub-flavored Markdown: headings become #, list items use -, tables become pipe tables, and links and code blocks are kept. Scripts, style blocks and comments are removed, and layout wrappers such as div and span are unwrapped so only the content structure remains.

When to use it
Migrating web content to docs-as-code
Moving help pages, blog posts or intranet articles written in HTML into GitHub, GitLab, Docusaurus or MkDocs becomes much faster when the markup is already converted to clean Markdown instead of reformatted by hand.
Clean input for AI tools and note apps
Converting an HTML page to Markdown before pasting it into a language model or a note app like Obsidian removes tag noise while keeping the heading, list and table structure readable.
Limitations to know
- No URL input; upload a saved .html or .htm file.
- Tables with merged cells (colspan/rowspan) have no exact equivalent in Markdown table syntax.
About the formats
What is HTML?
HTML (HyperText Markup Language) is the markup language web pages are written in. Headings, paragraphs, lists, tables, links and images are defined with tags, and CSS controls how they look. An .html file opens in any web browser without extra software and reflows to the screen width instead of using fixed pages. External stylesheets, web fonts and remote images are separate resources and do not travel with the file unless they are embedded in it.
What is Markdown (MD)?
Markdown is a lightweight markup language designed by John Gruber in 2004. Formatting is written as simple symbols inside plain text: # for headings, ** for bold, - for list items and | for tables. Markdown (.md) files are everywhere in GitHub READMEs, technical documentation, note-taking apps and AI assistant output. The most widely used flavour is GitHub Flavored Markdown (GFM), which adds tables, task lists and strikethrough.
Frequently asked questions
What happens to HTML tables without a header row?
GitHub-flavored Markdown tables require a header row. If your HTML table has no <th> cells, the converter treats the first row as the header and adds the separator line beneath it, so the table renders correctly as a table on GitHub, GitLab and most Markdown viewers.
Can I enter a web page URL to get Markdown?
No, the tool only accepts files. Open the page in your browser, press Ctrl+S (Cmd+S on Mac) to save it as .html and upload that file. A saved page also contains site navigation and footer elements, so you may want to trim those from the Markdown output afterwards.
Why convert HTML to Markdown rather than plain text?
Plain text keeps only the readable words, so link URLs and heading levels are lost. Markdown is still a plain text file, but it keeps headings, lists, tables and link addresses as lightweight markers. If you may later turn the content back into HTML or PDF, Markdown is the better intermediate format.
Is converting HTML to Markdown free?
Yes, completely free. There is no account, subscription or watermark — just upload your file and convert it.
Is my file safe and when is it deleted?
Your file is transferred over HTTPS and stored on our server under a random code. The upload and the output are permanently deleted within 30 minutes, and the download link only works for whoever holds your unique code.
