BMP to WebP Converter

To convert BMP to WebP, add your BMP files, choose WebP and press Convert. Bitmaps are stored without compression, so the WebP is typically a small fraction of the original size; the quality slider starts at 80%. WebP is supported by all current browsers, which makes it a good format for putting old bitmaps online. The conversion runs in your browser and the BMP never leaves your device.

  • Free, no sign-up
  • Your file never leaves your device
  • Up to 50 MB per file
Output format

Your file never leaves your device; images are processed in your browser. EXIF and location data are not added to the output.

How to convert BMP to WebP

  1. Add your BMP files

Drag the images onto the upload area or browse for them; you can add several files at once.

  2. Keep WebP as the output

WebP is already selected. For formats with a quality setting the slider starts at a default that suits the format (JPG 90%, WebP 80%, AVIF 60%); lower it if you want a smaller file.

  3. Convert and download

Press “Convert”. Every file is processed in your browser, and you can download the results one by one or as a ZIP.

What is preserved?

Kept

  • The image resolution (pixel dimensions)
  • The correct photo orientation (EXIF orientation is applied)
  • Colors (adapted to sRGB)

Changed

  • WebP is a lossy format: lower quality means a smaller file but less fine detail
  • The lossless source is recompressed at the quality you choose, so pixel values are no longer identical

Not carried over

  • EXIF, location and camera data: left out of the output for privacy

When to use it

Publish old bitmaps on a website

Screenshots and scans saved as BMP are far too heavy for a web page. As WebP they load quickly without visible change in most cases.

Free up disk space

Folders of BMP exports from older software, machines or cameras take up a lot of space. Converting them to WebP reduces storage dramatically.

Limitations to know

  • Up to 50 MB per file; the output can be at most 16,384 pixels on one side.
  • On iPhone and iPad, images above roughly 16 megapixels may not be processed because of a browser limit.

About the formats

What is BMP?

BMP is a bitmap format that stores pixels with little or no compression, so files are large. It is simple and widely supported by Windows software but rarely used on the web; PNG gives the same pixel-exact result in a much smaller file.

What is WebP?

WebP is an image format developed by Google for the web. It supports both lossy and lossless compression, transparency and animation, and typically produces smaller files than JPG or PNG at similar quality. All current browsers display WebP, though some older editors and print services cannot open it.

Frequently asked questions

How much smaller will the WebP be?

Commonly ten to fifty times smaller for photos and screenshots, because BMP stores raw pixels. The result bar shows the exact sizes before and after.

Should I choose lossy quality for screenshots from BMP?

For screenshots with text, set the quality high, around 90 to 100%, so letters stay crisp. Photographic BMP images look fine at the default 80%.

Can I convert a whole folder of BMP files?

Yes. Select or drop many bitmaps at once; each becomes its own WebP, and you can save them individually or together in a ZIP.

Is converting BMP to WebP free?

Yes, completely free. There is no account, subscription or watermark; just add your files and convert them.

Are my files uploaded anywhere?

No. Images are processed in your browser and never leave your device, so the waiting time depends on the file size and your device. EXIF and location data are not added to the output.
