DOC to Markdown Converter

To convert DOC to Markdown, upload your .doc file and choose Markdown (MD). Our server reads the document with LibreOffice and converts it to GitHub-flavoured Markdown: headings become #, lists use - or 1., tables become Markdown tables and links are kept. Tables without a header row get their first row promoted to the header, because GitHub tables require one.

When to use it

Migrating a legacy archive to a wiki or docs site

Procedures, manuals and technical notes piled up as .doc files can move to GitHub, a GitLab wiki, Docusaurus or Obsidian without reformatting every document by hand, which makes a docs-as-code migration realistic.

Building an AI knowledge base

Converting internal .doc files to Markdown before loading them into an LLM or RAG pipeline keeps the heading hierarchy and tables while dropping formatting noise, so the content splits cleanly into sections.

Limitations to know

  • Complex tables with merged cells are simplified in Markdown.
  • Password-protected or corrupted .doc files cannot be read.

About the formats

What is DOC?

DOC is the binary document format that was the default in Microsoft Word 97 through 2003. It stores text, formatting, tables and images in a single proprietary structure. DOCX replaced it in 2007, but DOC is still used because of older Office installations, some organisational systems and upload portals that only accept .doc. Current versions of Word, LibreOffice and Google Docs can open DOC files; DOCX is the better choice for new documents.

What is Markdown (MD)?

Markdown is a lightweight markup language designed by John Gruber in 2004. Formatting is written as simple symbols inside plain text: # for headings, ** for bold, - for list items and | for tables. Markdown (.md) files are everywhere in GitHub READMEs, technical documentation, note-taking apps and AI assistant output. The most widely used flavour is GitHub Flavored Markdown (GFM), which adds tables, task lists and strikethrough.

Frequently asked questions

Are tables from the DOC kept in Markdown?

Yes. Tables become GitHub-flavoured Markdown tables. Because Markdown tables need a header row, the first row is used as the header when the document does not define one. Merged cells are not supported in Markdown, so tables that rely on them are simplified.

How is this different from Word to Markdown?

The output is the same kind of .md file; only the source differs. This page is for legacy Word 97-2003 .doc files, which are first read with LibreOffice. If your file ends in .docx, use the Word to Markdown converter, which keeps headings, lists and tables in the same way.

Where can I use the Markdown file?

Markdown is plain text, so it opens in any editor. GitHub, GitLab, Obsidian, Notion, VS Code and most static site generators render it directly. If you later need a document again, convert it back with our Markdown to PDF or Markdown to Word converters.

Is converting DOC to Markdown free?

Yes, completely free. There is no account, subscription or watermark — just upload your file and convert it.

Is my file safe and when is it deleted?

Your file is transferred over HTTPS and stored on our server under a random code. The upload and the output are permanently deleted within 30 minutes, and the download link only works for whoever holds your unique code.
