What is preserved?
Kept
- How each page looks: text, graphics and images are drawn as in a PDF viewer
- The page proportions; the pixel size depends on the DPI you choose
Changed
- Each page becomes a flat GIF picture at the DPI you choose: 72 for screens, 150 as a balance, 300 for print
- Several pages are delivered together as a ZIP file (page-01, page-02 …); a single page comes back as one image
- Colors are reduced to at most 256, so photos and gradients show banding
Not carried over
- Selectable and searchable text: the pages become pictures
- Links, form fields, bookmarks and other interactive parts
- Transparency: pages are drawn on white
When to use it
Pages for systems that only take GIF
Some older help desks, wikis and e-learning platforms only accept GIF images. Converting the relevant pages makes them postable there.
Frames for a page-flip animation
If you want to build a simple animated GIF that flips through a few slides, converting each page to GIF first gives you frames in a matching format.
Limitations to know
- Up to 50 MB per PDF and up to 50 pages at a time; choose a page range for longer documents.
- Password-protected and damaged PDFs cannot be converted.
- A page larger than about 100 megapixels at the chosen DPI is refused; pick a lower DPI.
- The PDF is uploaded to our servers and deleted within 30 minutes.
About the formats
What is PDF?
PDF is a document format that looks the same on every device and in print. A page can contain text, vector graphics and images, and a file can have many pages. Converting PDF pages to images turns each page into a flat picture you can place on a website or in a design, while converting images to PDF packs pictures into pages of one document.
What is GIF?
GIF is an image format from 1987 limited to 256 colors per image. It supports simple on/off transparency and short animations, which is why it is still used for small graphics and looping clips. For photographs it is a poor choice, because the color limit causes visible banding.
Frequently asked questions
Do I get one animated GIF with all the pages?
No. Each page is saved as a separate still GIF, and multiple pages are packed in a ZIP. Combine them in an animation tool if you want them to play in sequence.
Which PDF pages look good as GIF?
Text pages, forms, charts and line drawings, because they use few colors. Pages with photos lose smooth shading under the 256-color limit.
How do I select pages from the end of the document?
Write a range such as 10- to convert from page ten to the last page, or list single pages separated by commas.
Is converting PDF to GIF free?
Yes, completely free. There is no account, subscription or watermark; just add your files and convert them.
Are my files uploaded anywhere?
Yes. This conversion runs on our servers, so your PDF is uploaded over an encrypted (HTTPS) connection, converted there and permanently deleted within 30 minutes at the latest. It is stored under a random code instead of its name, and processing is fully automated. EXIF and location data are not added to the output.
