TIFF to GIF Converter

To convert TIFF to GIF, add your TIFF files, choose GIF and press Convert. The image is reduced to at most 256 colors, which suits scans of text, line art and diagrams but makes photos banded. There is no quality setting. Each file is uploaded to our servers over a secure connection, read there and deleted within 30 minutes at the latest; only the first page of a multi-page TIFF is used.

  • Free, no sign-up
  • Uploaded securely, deleted within 30 minutes
  • Up to 50 MB per file

The selected format has no quality setting.

For multi-page TIFF files only the first page is converted.

Your file is uploaded to our servers over a secure (HTTPS) connection, converted there and permanently deleted within 30 minutes at the latest. Files are converted one after another.

How to convert TIFF to GIF

  1. Add your TIFF files

Drag the files onto the upload area or browse for them; you can add several files and they are converted one after another.

  2. Keep GIF as the output

GIF is already selected. GIF has no quality setting.

  3. Convert and download

Press “Convert”. Each file is uploaded to our servers, converted and deleted within 30 minutes at the latest; download the results one by one or as a ZIP.

What is preserved?

Kept

  • The image resolution (pixel dimensions)
  • The correct photo orientation (EXIF orientation is applied)
  • Colors (adapted to sRGB)

Changed

  • Semi-transparent areas become on/off transparency, so edges can look jagged
  • Colors are reduced to at most 256

Not carried over

  • EXIF, location and camera data: left out of the output for privacy
  • Pages after the first in a multi-page TIFF: only the first page is converted

When to use it

Small files from black-and-white scans

Fax-style and text scans stored as TIFF contain only a few tones. As GIF they become compact images that any browser and old viewer can show.

Diagrams for legacy documentation

Technical diagrams in TIFF can be converted to GIF for old help systems and intranet pages that only accept classic web formats.

Limitations to know

  • Up to 50 MB and about 100 megapixels per file.
  • The file is uploaded to our servers and deleted within 30 minutes at the latest; several files are converted one after another.

About the formats

What is TIFF?

TIFF is a high-quality image format used for scans, professional photography and printing. It typically stores pixels without lossy compression and can hold high color depth and several pages in one file, so files are very large. Web browsers do not display TIFF, so it is converted to JPG or PNG for sharing and publishing.

What is GIF?

GIF is an image format from 1987 limited to 256 colors per image. It supports simple on/off transparency and short animations, which is why it is still used for small graphics and looping clips. For photographs it is a poor choice, because the color limit causes visible banding.

Frequently asked questions

Which TIFF files are suitable for GIF?

Scans of text, drawings and diagrams with few colors. Color photographs need far more than 256 colors and look noticeably worse.

Will my multi-page TIFF become an animated GIF?

No. Only the first page is converted, and the GIF is a single still image.

Is the GIF smaller than the TIFF?

For scans with few tones, usually much smaller. For a photographic TIFF that was already compressed, the gain is smaller and the color loss is large.

Is converting TIFF to GIF free?

Yes, completely free. There is no account, subscription or watermark; just add your files and convert them.

Are my files uploaded anywhere?

Yes. This conversion runs on our servers, so your file is uploaded over an encrypted (HTTPS) connection, converted there and permanently deleted within 30 minutes at the latest. It is stored under a random code instead of its name, and processing is fully automated. EXIF and location data are not added to the output.
