Convert Word (DOCX) to Markdown
To convert Word to Markdown, upload your .docx file and choose MD as the target. Heading styles become # headings, bulleted lists become “-” items, numbered lists keep “1.”, tables become GitHub-flavored pipe tables, and bold, italics and links are kept. Fonts, colors and page layout are dropped because Markdown has no equivalent for them.

What is preserved?
Kept
- Heading styles (# to ###### levels)
- Bulleted and numbered lists
- Tables (GitHub pipe syntax)
- Bold, italic text and links
Changed
- In tables without a header row, the first row becomes the header
- Lines starting with “1.”, “-” or “#” are escaped so they stay plain text
Not carried over
- Fonts, colors and sizes
- Page layout, headers and footers
When to use it
Moving documentation into a Git repository
Convert an installation guide or project document from Word to Markdown, drop it into a README or docs folder, and review every future change line by line in Git alongside your code.
Importing into notes apps and static sites
Obsidian, Notion imports and static site generators such as Hugo or Docusaurus all expect Markdown. Converting the Word file keeps its headings and tables, so you only need to review the result.
Limitations to know
- Images are embedded as base64 data, which some platforms such as GitHub may not display.
- Lines that are only enlarged or bold, without a heading style, may stay regular paragraphs.
About the formats
What is Word (DOCX)?
DOCX is the default document format of Microsoft Word since Word 2007. It is based on the Office Open XML standard: the file is a ZIP package that stores text, styles, tables, images, headers and footers as separate XML parts. DOCX files open and edit in Word, LibreOffice Writer, Google Docs and Pages, which makes it the most common format for exchanging editable documents. When a fixed layout matters, DOCX files are usually converted to PDF.
What is Markdown (MD)?
Markdown is a lightweight markup language designed by John Gruber in 2004. Formatting is written as simple symbols inside plain text: # for headings, ** for bold, - for list items and | for tables. Markdown (.md) files are everywhere in GitHub READMEs, technical documentation, note-taking apps and AI assistant output. The most widely used flavour is GitHub Flavored Markdown (GFM), which adds tables, task lists and strikethrough.
Frequently asked questions
Do Word heading styles become Markdown headings?
Lines formatted with Word's Heading 1, Heading 2 and similar styles become #, ## and deeper Markdown headings, and redundant bold markers around them are removed. Lines that are merely larger or bold may not be recognized as headings, so apply heading styles in Word for the best result.
How are images handled in the Markdown file?
Images from the Word document are written into the Markdown as base64 data, embedded in the file itself. Some editors display them, but platforms such as GitHub may not. In that case save the images as separate files and reference them with relative links in the Markdown.
Will the tables render on GitHub?
Tables are written in GitHub-flavored pipe syntax, which GitHub renders as tables. GitHub requires a header row, so for Word tables without one the first row is automatically promoted to the header. Merged cells have no Markdown equivalent and may be split.
Is converting Word to Markdown free?
Yes, completely free. There is no account, subscription or watermark — just upload your file and convert it.
