GIF to PNG Converter

To convert GIF to PNG, add your GIF files and press Convert with PNG selected. The first frame of each GIF is saved as a lossless PNG with its transparency intact. Animated GIFs are not turned into moving PNGs; only a still image is produced. Everything runs in your browser, so the files never leave your device.

  • Free, no sign-up
  • Your file never leaves your device
  • Up to 50 MB per file
Output format

PNG is a lossless format, so there is no quality setting. File size depends on the resolution and the picture itself.

Your file never leaves your device; images are processed in your browser. EXIF and location data are not added to the output.

How to convert GIF to PNG

  1. Add your GIF files

Drag the images onto the upload area or browse for them; you can add several files at once.

  2. Keep PNG as the output

PNG is already selected. For formats with a quality setting the slider starts at 100%; lower it if you want a smaller file.

  3. Convert and download

Press “Convert”. Every file is processed in your browser, and you can download the results one by one or as a ZIP.

What is preserved?

Kept

  • The image resolution (pixel dimensions)
  • The correct photo orientation (EXIF orientation is applied)
  • Colors (adapted to sRGB)
  • Transparency (alpha channel)

Not carried over

  • EXIF, location and camera data: left out of the output for privacy
  • Motion: only the first frame is converted

When to use it

Grab a still from an animated GIF

When you need a single clean frame for a document, slide or thumbnail, converting to PNG gives you the first frame without opening an editor.

Use a GIF graphic in modern workflows

Old logos and icons are often stored as GIF. As PNG they are easier to edit and combine with modern tools while keeping the transparent background.

Limitations to know

  • For animated GIF files only the first frame is converted.
  • Up to 50 MB per file; the output can be at most 16,384 pixels on one side.
  • On iPhone and iPad, images above roughly 16 megapixels may not be processed because of a browser limit.

About the formats

What is GIF?

GIF is an image format from 1987 limited to 256 colors per image. It supports simple on/off transparency and short animations, which is why it is still used for small graphics and looping clips. For photographs it is a poor choice, because the color limit causes visible banding.

What is PNG?

PNG stores pixels without loss and supports full transparency, which makes it a good fit for screenshots, logos and graphics with sharp edges or text. The price is size: photographs saved as PNG are usually much larger than the same picture as JPG or WebP. PNG does not store animations.

Frequently asked questions

What happens to an animated GIF?

Only the first frame is converted, so the PNG is a still image. The animation itself is not preserved.

Will the colors improve?

No. A GIF has at most 256 colors and the PNG keeps exactly those colors; PNG can store more, but the converter does not invent detail that the GIF never had.

Is GIF transparency kept?

Yes. The transparent areas of the GIF stay transparent in the PNG.

Why might the PNG be larger than the GIF?

GIF compresses simple flat-color graphics very efficiently, so a PNG of the same frame can end up somewhat larger or smaller depending on the picture. The result bar shows the exact sizes.

Is converting GIF to PNG free?

Yes, completely free. There is no account, subscription or watermark; just add your files and convert them.

Are my files uploaded anywhere?

No. Images are processed in your browser and never leave your device, so the waiting time depends on the file size and your device. EXIF and location data are not added to the output.
