When to use it
Working with AI assistants
Markdown is a good fit when you want an AI assistant to summarise a ruling or outline counter-arguments: it keeps the structure without carrying formatting noise. Remember to anonymise personal data before sharing documents.
Notes apps and knowledge bases
Storing precedent rulings and template petitions as Markdown in Obsidian, Notion or a Git repository gives your office a searchable archive with version history that does not depend on the UYAP editor.
Limitations to know
- Complex tables with merged cells are simplified, because GitHub table syntax cannot express merges.
- For e-signed documents, signature validation does not carry over to the new file; re-sign in UYAP for official use.
About the formats
What is UDF?
UDF is the document format of UYAP (Ulusal Yargı Ağı Bilişim Sistemi), Turkey's national judiciary information system. Lawyers, courts and enforcement offices create petitions, minutes and rulings in this format with the UYAP Document Editor. A .udf file is a ZIP package whose content.xml holds the full text, paragraph and character styles, tables and embedded images. It is unrelated to Universal Disk Format, and Word or PDF readers cannot open it directly.
What is Markdown (MD)?
Markdown is a lightweight markup language designed by John Gruber in 2004. Formatting is written as simple symbols inside plain text: # for headings, ** for bold, - for list items and | for tables. Markdown (.md) files are everywhere in GitHub READMEs, technical documentation, note-taking apps and AI assistant output. The most widely used flavour is GitHub Flavored Markdown (GFM), which adds tables, task lists and strikethrough.
Frequently asked questions
Do UDF headings become # headings in Markdown?
Usually not. The UDF format stores headings as paragraphs with larger or bold text rather than as a separate heading level, so these lines come through as **bold** text. If you want a navigable outline in your notes app, adding # in front of the key headings by hand takes only a moment.
Can I convert the Markdown back into a UDF file?
Yes. After editing, use the Markdown to UDF converter; headings, lists and tables are carried over. Fonts and page layout may differ from the original UDF, so open the file in the UYAP Document Editor and check it before filing it in UYAP.
Is TXT or Markdown better for feeding a UDF to an AI tool?
Markdown usually works better: lists, tables and emphasis survive, so the model understands the document's structure more accurately. TXT carries only the text and flattens tables into tab-separated lines. Either way, check your data protection obligations before sharing client information.
