Whether accented and non-Latin characters display correctly depends on the character encoding; UTF-8, today's standard, handles virtually every language. Plain text is ideal for searching, archiving and moving content between systems.
What is HTML?
HTML (HyperText Markup Language) is the markup language web pages are written in. Headings, paragraphs, lists, tables, links and images are defined with tags, and CSS controls how they look. An .html file opens in any web browser without extra software and reflows to the screen width instead of using fixed pages. External stylesheets, web fonts and remote images are separate resources and do not travel with the file unless they are embedded in it.
Frequently asked questions
Are URLs in the text turned into clickable links?
No. The converter keeps the text as it is and does not wrap web addresses in <a> tags. If you want working links, write the text in Markdown using the [link text](url) syntax and convert it with the Markdown to HTML converter, which produces proper anchor tags.
Is the output a full HTML page or just a fragment?
It is a full page. The file includes a <!DOCTYPE html> declaration, a UTF-8 meta charset tag, a viewport tag for mobile display and a <title> taken from your file name. If you only need the content, copy the paragraphs inside <body> into your own template.
How do I get headings and bullet lists in the HTML?
Plain text carries no structure, so every line becomes a paragraph. Mark headings with # and list items with -, save the file with an .md extension and use the Markdown to HTML converter; it turns those markers into real <h1> and <ul> elements.
