What is preserved?
Kept
- How each page looks: text, graphics and images are drawn as in a PDF viewer
- The page proportions; the pixel size depends on the DPI you choose
Changed
- Each page becomes a flat ICO picture at the DPI you choose: 72 for screens, 150 as a balance, 300 for print
- Several pages are delivered together as a ZIP file (page-01, page-02 …); a single page comes back as one image
- Each page is scaled into square icon sizes of up to 256 × 256 pixels, so the page is small and gets empty space on the sides
Not carried over
- Selectable and searchable text: the pages become pictures
- Links, form fields, bookmarks and other interactive parts
- Transparency: pages are drawn on white
When to use it
A favicon from a logo delivered as PDF
Agencies and printers often supply logos as PDF. If the logo fills a page, converting it to ICO gives you a favicon.ico without a design program.
Icons from a brand guidelines document
When a brand guide contains a page with just the symbol, converting that page produces an icon for shortcuts or internal tools.
Limitations to know
- Up to 50 MB per PDF and up to 50 pages at a time; choose a page range for longer documents.
- Password-protected and damaged PDFs cannot be converted.
- A page larger than about 100 megapixels at the chosen DPI is refused; pick a lower DPI.
- The PDF is uploaded to our servers and deleted within 30 minutes.
About the formats
What is PDF?
PDF is a document format that looks the same on every device and in print. A page can contain text, vector graphics and images, and a file can have many pages. Converting PDF pages to images turns each page into a flat picture you can place on a website or in a design, while converting images to PDF packs pictures into pages of one document.
What is ICO?
ICO is an icon format that stores several square sizes (for example 16, 32 and 48 pixels) in a single file. It is used for Windows icons and for a website's favicon.ico; when a browser needs a small tab icon it picks the matching size from the file. It supports transparency, but cannot be larger than 256 × 256 pixels.
Frequently asked questions
Why is my logo tiny inside the icon?
The whole page is used, including its white margins, and then fitted into a square. Use a PDF where the logo fills the page, or convert to PNG first, crop tightly and then make the ICO.
Which DPI is enough for an icon?
Icons stop at 256 pixels, so 72 or 150 DPI is plenty for a full page; 300 DPI only adds processing time here.
Will the icon be transparent?
No. PDF pages are rendered with a white background, so the icon shows the logo on white. For a transparent icon, start from a PNG or SVG of the logo.
Is converting PDF to ICO free?
Yes, completely free. There is no account, subscription or watermark; just add your files and convert them.
Are my files uploaded anywhere?
Yes. This conversion runs on our servers, so your PDF is uploaded over an encrypted (HTTPS) connection, converted there and permanently deleted within 30 minutes at the latest. It is stored under a random code instead of its name, and processing is fully automated. EXIF and location data are not added to the output.
