HEIC to AVIF Converter
To convert HEIC to AVIF, add your iPhone photos, choose AVIF, set the quality (60% by default) and press Convert. AVIF is similarly compact to HEIC but is supported by modern web browsers, which makes it a good choice for putting photos online. Each photo is uploaded to our servers over a secure connection, read there and deleted within 30 minutes at the latest.
- Free, no sign-up
- Uploaded securely, deleted within 30 minutes
- Up to 50 MB per file
Only the main picture is converted; extra data stored in the file, such as a Live Photo clip or depth map, is not carried over.
Your file is uploaded to our servers over a secure (HTTPS) connection, converted there and permanently deleted within 30 minutes at the latest. Files are converted one after another.
How to convert HEIC to AVIF
Add your HEIC files
Drag the files onto the upload area or browse for them; you can add several files and they are converted one after another.
Keep AVIF as the output
AVIF is already selected. The quality slider starts at a default that suits the format (JPG 90%, WebP 80%, AVIF 60%); lower it if you want an even smaller file.
Convert and download
Press “Convert”. Each file is uploaded to our servers, converted and deleted within 30 minutes at the latest; download the results one by one or as a ZIP.
What is preserved?
Kept
- The image resolution (pixel dimensions)
- The correct photo orientation (EXIF orientation is applied)
- Colors (adapted to sRGB)
- Transparency (alpha channel)
Changed
- AVIF is a lossy format: lower quality means a smaller file but less fine detail
Not carried over
- EXIF, location and camera data: left out of the output for privacy
- Extras stored in the HEIC file, such as a Live Photo clip or a depth map: only the main picture is converted
When to use it
Put iPhone photos on a website
Browsers outside Safari do not show HEIC, but they do show AVIF. Converting keeps photos light for a blog, portfolio or shop page.
Keep small files after leaving the Apple ecosystem
If you move your photos to Windows or Android but want to keep sizes close to HEIC, AVIF is a modern format with comparable compression.
Limitations to know
- Up to 50 MB and about 100 megapixels per file.
- The file is uploaded to our servers and deleted within 30 minutes at the latest; several files are converted one after another.
About the formats
What is HEIC?
HEIC (also called HEIF) is the photo format that iPhones and many recent cameras use by default. It stores photos in about half the space of a JPG at similar quality and supports transparency and several images in one file. Web browsers and many programs cannot open it, which is why HEIC photos are usually converted to JPG, PNG or WebP before they are shared.
What is AVIF?
AVIF is a modern image format based on the AV1 video codec. It delivers very small files at high visual quality, supports transparency, HDR and animation, and is among the most efficient formats for the web. Encoding is slower than for other formats, and some older software cannot open AVIF yet.
Frequently asked questions
Is AVIF as small as HEIC?
Roughly. Both formats come from modern video compression, so at similar quality the files are in the same range. The exact size depends on the photo and the quality you set.
Is a Live Photo's motion converted?
No. Only the still image of the HEIC is converted; the short video part of a Live Photo and any depth map stay out of the AVIF.
Why does HEIC to AVIF take a while?
Each photo has to be uploaded, decoded and then encoded as AVIF, which is one of the slowest formats to create. Large batches from an iPhone camera can take a minute or more.
Is converting HEIC to AVIF free?
Yes, completely free. There is no account, subscription or watermark; just add your files and convert them.
Are my files uploaded anywhere?
Yes. This conversion runs on our servers, so your file is uploaded over an encrypted (HTTPS) connection, converted there and permanently deleted within 30 minutes at the latest. It is stored under a random code instead of its name, and processing is fully automated. EXIF and location data are not added to the output.
