AVIF to WebP Converter
To convert AVIF to WebP, add your AVIF files, select WebP and press Convert. WebP is still small but is supported by more editors, content systems and older browsers than AVIF. The quality slider starts at 80% and transparency is kept. If the AVIF is animated, the first frame is converted. Everything runs in your browser, so the files stay on your device.
- Free, no sign-up
- Your file never leaves your device
- Up to 50 MB per file
Your file never leaves your device; images are processed in your browser. EXIF and location data are not added to the output.
How to convert AVIF to WebP
Add your AVIF files
Drag the images onto the upload area or browse for them; you can add several files at once.
Keep WebP as the output
WebP is already selected. For formats with a quality setting the slider starts at a default that suits the format (JPG 90%, WebP 80%, AVIF 60%); lower it if you want a smaller file.
Convert and download
Press “Convert”. Every file is processed in your browser, and you can download the results one by one or as a ZIP.
What is preserved?
Kept
- The image resolution (pixel dimensions)
- The correct photo orientation (EXIF orientation is applied)
- Colors (adapted to sRGB)
- Transparency (alpha channel)
Changed
- WebP is a lossy format: lower quality means a smaller file but less fine detail
Not carried over
- EXIF, location and camera data: left out of the output for privacy
- Motion: only the first frame is converted
When to use it
Upload to a CMS that rejects AVIF
Several website builders, shop systems and social networks accept WebP but not yet AVIF. Converting keeps the file light while getting it past the upload filter.
Edit AVIF images in common tools
Many image editors open WebP without plugins but still struggle with AVIF. A WebP copy can be cropped and annotated in more programs.
Limitations to know
- For animated AVIF files only the first frame is converted. Animated WebP output is not supported.
- Up to 50 MB per file; the output can be at most 16,384 pixels on one side.
- On iPhone and iPad, images above roughly 16 megapixels may not be processed because of a browser limit.
About the formats
What is AVIF?
AVIF is a modern image format based on the AV1 video codec. It delivers very small files at high visual quality, supports transparency, HDR and animation, and is among the most efficient formats for the web. Encoding is slower than for other formats, and some older software cannot open AVIF yet.
What is WebP?
WebP is an image format developed by Google for the web. It supports both lossy and lossless compression, transparency and animation, and typically produces smaller files than JPG or PNG at similar quality. All current browsers display WebP, though some older editors and print services cannot open it.
Frequently asked questions
Will the WebP be larger than the AVIF?
Usually somewhat larger, because AVIF compresses more efficiently. At 80% quality the WebP still tends to be far smaller than a JPG or PNG of the same picture.
Is transparency kept from AVIF to WebP?
Yes. Both formats have a full alpha channel, so transparent and semi-transparent areas carry over unchanged.
Should I raise the quality above the default?
Only if you see blur or blockiness at 80%. The AVIF has already been compressed once, so very high WebP quality mostly makes the file bigger without bringing detail back.
Is converting AVIF to WebP free?
Yes, completely free. There is no account, subscription or watermark; just add your files and convert them.
Are my files uploaded anywhere?
No. Images are processed in your browser and never leave your device, so the waiting time depends on the file size and your device. EXIF and location data are not added to the output.
