Convert Word (DOCX) to PDF

To convert Word to PDF, upload your .docx file, keep PDF as the target and start the conversion. The document is rendered directly by LibreOffice on our server, so page size, margins, headers and footers, tables and images keep their positions. Fonts that are not installed on the server are replaced with similar ones, which can shift a few line breaks.

  • Page size, margins and page breaks
  • Headers, footers and page numbers
  • Tables, borders and image positions
  • Bulleted and numbered lists

Changed

  • Fonts not installed on the server (e.g. Calibri) are substituted
  • Font substitution can move line and page breaks

Not carried over

  • Macros (PDF cannot run them)

When to use it

Sending a CV or job application

A PDF résumé looks the same on the recruiter's screen whatever software they use, and it cannot be edited by accident. Most application portals also prefer PDF uploads over Word files.

Sharing quotes, contracts and letters

Converting a proposal or contract draft to PDF lets you send a fixed version instead of an editable DOCX, while the logo in the header and the page numbers in the footer stay in place.

Preparing a print-ready file

When a document goes to a print shop or a shared office printer, a PDF helps margins and page breaks come out the way you set them in Word, without tables spilling onto the next page.

Limitations to know

  • The output is a standard PDF, not PDF/A for long-term archiving.
  • Text in the PDF is not editable; keep your DOCX for future changes.

About the formats

What is Word (DOCX)?

DOCX is the default document format of Microsoft Word since Word 2007. It is based on the Office Open XML standard: the file is a ZIP package that stores text, styles, tables, images, headers and footers as separate XML parts. DOCX files open and edit in Word, LibreOffice Writer, Google Docs and Pages, which makes it the most common format for exchanging editable documents. When a fixed layout matters, DOCX files are usually converted to PDF.

What is PDF?

PDF (Portable Document Format) is a fixed-layout document format created by Adobe and standardised as ISO 32000. Every piece of text, image and line is stored with its position on the page, so a PDF looks the same on every device and prints reliably. The trade-off is editing: a PDF stores positions on a page, not paragraphs and tables. Scanned PDFs contain only page images and need OCR before any text can be extracted.

Frequently asked questions

Why does the font in my PDF look different from Word?

The conversion runs on our server. If a font used in your document is not installed there, LibreOffice uses the closest available alternative. Letter widths can change slightly, so a line or page may break at a different point. Documents that use common or open-source fonts usually show no visible difference.

Will hyperlinks still work in the PDF?

Yes. LibreOffice's PDF export writes the hyperlinks from your Word document as clickable links in the PDF, with the same visible text and target address. Only web addresses that were typed as plain text in Word, without being turned into a hyperlink, remain plain text in the PDF.

Can I convert an old .doc (Word 97-2003) file to PDF too?

Yes, use the DOC to PDF page for that; this page is for .docx files. Both conversions use the same LibreOffice engine, so page layout, tables and images are handled the same way whichever Word format you start from.

Can I turn the PDF back into an editable Word file later?

You can with our PDF to Word converter, but PDF-based conversions rebuild the layout approximately and tables do not come back as real tables. If you expect to edit the document again, keeping the original .docx is always the better option.

Is converting Word to PDF free?

Yes, completely free. There is no account, subscription or watermark — just upload your file and convert it.

Is my file safe and when is it deleted?

Your file is transferred over HTTPS and stored on our server under a random code. The upload and the output are permanently deleted within 30 minutes, and the download link only works for whoever holds your unique code.
