What is preserved?
Kept
- How each page looks: text, graphics and images are drawn as in a PDF viewer
- The page proportions; the pixel size depends on the DPI you choose
Changed
- Each page becomes a flat AVIF picture at the DPI you choose: 72 for screens, 150 as a balance, 300 for print
- Several pages are delivered together as a ZIP file (page-01, page-02 …); a single page comes back as one image
- AVIF is lossy: lower quality makes smaller files with less fine detail
Not carried over
- Selectable and searchable text: the pages become pictures
- Links, form fields, bookmarks and other interactive parts
- Transparency: pages are drawn on white
When to use it
Lightweight page images for mobile
Catalogs and brochures shown as images on a mobile site load faster as AVIF, which saves visitors data on slow connections.
Store page snapshots compactly
Keep image snapshots of contracts, invoices or reports at a fraction of the space that PNG pages would take.

About the formats
What is PDF?
PDF is a document format that looks the same on every device and in print. A page can contain text, vector graphics and images, and a file can have many pages. Converting PDF pages to images turns each page into a flat picture you can place on a website or in a design, while converting images to PDF packs pictures into pages of one document.
What is AVIF?
AVIF is a modern image format based on the AV1 video codec. It delivers very small files at high visual quality, supports transparency, HDR and animation, and is among the most efficient formats for the web. Encoding is slower than for other formats, and some older software cannot open AVIF yet.
Frequently asked questions
Why does PDF to AVIF take longer than PDF to JPG?
AVIF is slow to encode, and a 300 DPI page has millions of pixels. Choose 150 DPI or fewer pages if you want quicker results.
Is the page text still searchable?
No. The text is drawn into the picture and can only be read, not selected or searched. Keep the PDF when you need the text itself.
What if the PDF does not convert?
Password-protected and damaged PDFs cannot be opened. Remove the password or re-save the file in a PDF program, then try again.
Is converting PDF to AVIF free?
Yes, completely free. There is no account, subscription or watermark; just add your files and convert them.
Are my files uploaded anywhere?
Yes. This conversion runs on our servers, so your PDF is uploaded over an encrypted (HTTPS) connection, converted there and permanently deleted within 30 minutes at the latest. It is stored under a random code instead of its name, and processing is fully automated. EXIF and location data are not added to the output.
