Convert TXT to Word (DOCX)

To convert a text file to Word, upload your .txt file, keep Word (DOCX) as the target and click convert. Every line of the text becomes its own paragraph in a .docx set in Times New Roman 12 pt, leading spaces and tabs are preserved, and the encoding (UTF-8, UTF-16 or Windows-1254) is detected automatically, so accented characters come through intact.

What is preserved?

Kept

  • All text, in its original line order

  • Accented and non-Latin characters
  • Blank lines, as spacing between paragraphs

Changed

  • Every line becomes a separate Word paragraph
  • Text is set in Times New Roman 12 pt

When to use it

Turning a plain draft into a formatted document

You wrote a letter, report or article outline in Notepad or TextEdit and now need headings, bold text and page layout. Converting to DOCX gives you an editable starting point without copying and pasting line by line.

Editing exported text from other software

Many tools export logs, form submissions or transcripts as .txt. Turning that export into a Word document lets you add comments, track changes and share it with colleagues who work in Word.

Limitations to know

  • Hard-wrapped text (a line break at the end of every line) turns into one paragraph per line.
  • Headings, lists and tables are not detected; everything arrives as plain paragraphs.
  • URLs in the text are not turned into clickable links.

About the formats

What is TXT?

A TXT file contains characters only, with no formatting, images or page layout information. It opens in every program from Notepad to code editors and is the smallest and most portable kind of document. Whether accented and non-Latin characters display correctly depends on the character encoding; UTF-8, today's standard, handles virtually every language. Plain text is ideal for searching, archiving and moving content between systems.

What is Word (DOCX)?

DOCX is the default document format of Microsoft Word since Word 2007. It is based on the Office Open XML standard: the file is a ZIP package that stores text, styles, tables, images, headers and footers as separate XML parts. DOCX files open and edit in Word, LibreOffice Writer, Google Docs and Pages, which makes it the most common format for exchanging editable documents. When a fixed layout matters, DOCX files are usually converted to PDF.

Frequently asked questions

Why does my Word file have a separate paragraph for every line?

A .txt file has no concept of paragraphs, only line breaks, so the converter maps each line to its own paragraph. If your text was hard-wrapped at a fixed width, for example an email or terminal output, use Find and Replace in Word to remove the extra paragraph marks and rejoin the lines.

Which text encodings are supported?

The converter first checks for a byte order mark (UTF-8 or UTF-16). Without one, it tries UTF-8 and, if the bytes are not valid UTF-8, falls back to Windows-1254, the code page older Turkish Windows systems use. Files saved by Notepad, TextEdit and most editors are therefore read correctly.

Should I choose DOCX or DOC?

Choose DOCX for Word 2007 or later, LibreOffice, Google Docs and mobile apps; it is the modern default. Use the TXT to DOC converter only when a recipient or upload portal specifically asks for the legacy Word 97-2003 .doc format. The text content is identical, only the file structure differs.

Is converting TXT to Word free?

Yes, completely free. There is no account, subscription or watermark — just upload your file and convert it.

Is my file safe and when is it deleted?

Your file is transferred over HTTPS and stored on our server under a random code. The upload and the output are permanently deleted within 30 minutes, and the download link only works for whoever holds your unique code.
