Convert Markdown to PDF

To convert Markdown to PDF, upload your .md file and choose PDF. The file is rendered with GitHub-flavoured extensions and printed to A4 pages with Chromium: tables get borders and a shaded header row, code blocks use a monospace font on a grey background, and blockquotes get a left rule. Body text is Times New Roman 12 pt, and long code lines wrap instead of running off the page.

What is preserved?

Kept

  • Headings, emphasis and links
  • Tables with borders and a shaded header row
  • Code blocks on a grey background, monospaced
  • Blockquotes, footnotes and nested lists

Changed

  • Task-list checkboxes print as ☑ and ☐ characters
  • Page size is A4

Not carried over

  • Images referenced by URL or relative path
  • Mermaid diagrams (JavaScript is not executed)
  • Syntax highlighting

When to use it

Sharing a README as a document

Send a project's README.md or installation guide to a client, auditor or manager as a PDF. They see the same layout on any device without needing a Markdown viewer or a GitHub account.

Printing notes and technical reports

Lecture notes, technical write-ups and meeting minutes kept in Markdown can be printed or archived as a PDF with a fixed layout, with tables and code samples still easy to read.

Limitations to know

  • LaTeX math is not rendered as formulas.
  • Page size, margins and fonts cannot be chosen during conversion.

About the formats

What is Markdown (MD)?

Markdown is a lightweight markup language designed by John Gruber in 2004. Formatting is written as simple symbols inside plain text: # for headings, ** for bold, - for list items and | for tables. Markdown (.md) files are everywhere in GitHub READMEs, technical documentation, note-taking apps and AI assistant output. The most widely used flavour is GitHub Flavored Markdown (GFM), which adds tables, task lists and strikethrough.

What is PDF?

PDF (Portable Document Format) is a fixed-layout document format created by Adobe and standardised as ISO 32000. Every piece of text, image and line is stored with its position on the page, so a PDF looks the same on every device and prints reliably. The trade-off is editing: a PDF stores positions on a page, not paragraphs and tables. Scanned PDFs contain only page images and need OCR before any text can be extracted.

Frequently asked questions

Are Mermaid diagrams and math formulas rendered in the PDF?

No. JavaScript is not executed when the PDF is generated, so Mermaid code blocks are printed as code rather than drawn as diagrams, and LaTeX math is not typeset. If you export a diagram as PNG and embed it in the .md file as a data URI, it will appear in the PDF as an image.

Why are the images in my Markdown not in the PDF?

Only the uploaded .md file is processed, and no external resources are loaded while the PDF is generated. Images referenced as ./image.png or by an https address therefore do not appear. To include an image, embed it in the Markdown as a data URI (base64); embedded images are printed.

Is there syntax highlighting for code blocks?

No. Code blocks are printed without colours, in a monospace font on a grey background. Long lines wrap onto the next line instead of being cut off at the page edge, so the whole snippet stays readable. If you need highlighted code, use the HTML output with your own stylesheet.

Is converting Markdown to PDF free?

Yes, completely free. There is no account, subscription or watermark — just upload your file and convert it.

Is my file safe and when is it deleted?

Your file is transferred over HTTPS and stored on our server under a random code. The upload and the output are permanently deleted within 30 minutes, and the download link only works for whoever holds your unique code.
