GIF to AVIF Converter

To convert GIF to AVIF, add your GIF files, choose AVIF and press Convert. The first frame of each GIF is encoded as an AVIF, starting at 60% quality, with transparency kept. There is no animated AVIF output, so moving GIFs become still images. AVIF encoding is slower than other formats. The conversion runs in your browser, so the GIF never leaves your device.

  • Free, no sign-up
  • Your file never leaves your device
  • Up to 50 MB per file
Output format

Your file never leaves your device; images are processed in your browser. EXIF and location data are not added to the output.

How to convert GIF to AVIF

  1. Add your GIF files

Drag the images onto the upload area or browse for them; you can add several files at once.

  2. Keep AVIF as the output

AVIF is already selected. For formats with a quality setting the slider starts at a default that suits the format (JPG 90%, WebP 80%, AVIF 60%); lower it if you want a smaller file.

  3. Convert and download

Press “Convert”. Every file is processed in your browser, and you can download the results one by one or as a ZIP.

What is preserved?

Kept

  • The image resolution (pixel dimensions)
  • The correct photo orientation (EXIF orientation is applied)
  • Colors (adapted to sRGB)
  • Transparency (alpha channel)

Changed

  • AVIF is a lossy format: lower quality means a smaller file but less fine detail
  • The lossless source is recompressed at the quality you choose, so pixel values are no longer identical

Not carried over

  • EXIF, location and camera data: left out of the output for privacy
  • Motion: only the first frame is converted

When to use it

Smallest possible still image

For a static banner or illustration that was stored as GIF, AVIF gives one of the smallest file sizes available in modern browsers.

Clean up a legacy asset folder

When you move an old website to a modern stack, converting non-animated GIF assets to AVIF reduces the total size of the image folder.

Limitations to know

  • For animated GIF files only the first frame is converted. Animated AVIF output is not supported.
  • Up to 50 MB per file; the output can be at most 16,384 pixels on one side.
  • On iPhone and iPad, images above roughly 16 megapixels may not be processed because of a browser limit.

About the formats

What is GIF?

GIF is an image format from 1987 limited to 256 colors per image. It supports simple on/off transparency and short animations, which is why it is still used for small graphics and looping clips. For photographs it is a poor choice, because the color limit causes visible banding.

What is AVIF?

AVIF is a modern image format based on the AV1 video codec. It delivers very small files at high visual quality, supports transparency, HDR and animation, and is among the most efficient formats for the web. Encoding is slower than for other formats, and some older software cannot open AVIF yet.

Frequently asked questions

Does the animation survive in AVIF?

No. This page encodes the first frame only, so the AVIF is a still picture. Keep the GIF if the motion matters.

What quality setting suits GIF graphics?

The default 60% works for most images. For flat-color graphics with fine text, move the slider up so edges stay clean; the file stays small in any case.

Will AVIF open on older devices?

Not reliably. Older browsers, Windows photo viewers and office programs may not show AVIF, which is the main trade-off for its small size.

Is converting GIF to AVIF free?

Yes, completely free. There is no account, subscription or watermark; just add your files and convert them.

Are my files uploaded anywhere?

No. Images are processed in your browser and never leave your device, so the waiting time depends on the file size and your device. EXIF and location data are not added to the output.
