Convert Markdown to DOC
To convert Markdown to DOC, upload your .md file and choose DOC; you get a genuine Word 97-2003 binary .doc file. Headings, emphasis, lists, tables and code blocks come through the same way as in the Word (DOCX) output. Pick DOC only when the recipient runs an old Office version or an upload system insists on .doc; otherwise DOCX is the better choice.

What is preserved?
Kept
- Headings, bold and italic text
- Lists and bordered tables
- Code blocks, in a monospace font
Changed
- Task-list checkboxes become ☑ and ☐ characters
Not carried over
- Images referenced by URL or relative path
When to use it
Portals that only accept .doc
Some government application systems, submission forms and legacy document management tools only accept the .doc extension. Convert your Markdown straight to that format instead of going through DOCX and re-saving the file.
Recipients on Word 2003 or earlier
When you send a document to an organisation or person still using Word 2003 or older, a DOC file opens and stays editable without a compatibility pack or conversion add-in.
Limitations to know
- DOC is a legacy format; some features of newer Word versions cannot be stored in it.
About the formats
What is Markdown (MD)?
Markdown is a lightweight markup language designed by John Gruber in 2004. Formatting is written as simple symbols inside plain text: # for headings, ** for bold, - for list items and | for tables. Markdown (.md) files are everywhere in GitHub READMEs, technical documentation, note-taking apps and AI assistant output. The most widely used flavour is GitHub Flavored Markdown (GFM), which adds tables, task lists and strikethrough.
What is DOC?
DOC is the binary document format that was the default in Microsoft Word 97 through 2003. It stores text, formatting, tables and images in a single proprietary structure. DOCX replaced it in 2007, but DOC is still used because of older Office installations, some organisational systems and upload portals that only accept .doc. Current versions of Word, LibreOffice and Google Docs can open DOC files; DOCX is the better choice for new documents.
Frequently asked questions
Should I choose DOC or DOCX for my Markdown file?
In most cases choose DOCX: Word 2007 and later, LibreOffice, Google Docs and Pages all handle it well. Use DOC only when you know the recipient runs Word 97-2003 or the portal you upload to explicitly requires .doc. The Markdown content is processed the same way for both.
Is the output a real .doc file?
Yes. The Markdown is rendered to HTML and then written as a binary .doc file by LibreOffice's Word 97 export filter on our server. It is not a renamed DOCX, which is why it opens in Word 2003 and earlier versions that cannot read .docx.
Can I convert the DOC back to Markdown?
Yes. The DOC to Markdown converter turns the .doc file back into a .md file: headings, lists, tables and links become Markdown syntax again. Fonts, colours and page layout are dropped, since Markdown has no equivalent for them.
Is converting Markdown to DOC free?
Yes, completely free. There is no account, subscription or watermark — just upload your file and convert it.
Is my file safe and when is it deleted?
Your file is transferred over HTTPS and stored on our server under a random code. The upload and the output are permanently deleted within 30 minutes, and the download link only works for whoever holds your unique code.
