BMP to PNG Converter

To convert BMP to PNG, add your BMP files and press Convert with PNG selected. PNG compresses the pixels without losing anything, so the picture stays identical while the file is usually much smaller than the BMP. Everything runs in your browser, so the files are never uploaded.

  • Free, no sign-up
  • Your file never leaves your device
  • Up to 50 MB per file
Output format

PNG is a lossless format, so there is no quality setting. File size depends on the resolution and the picture itself.

Your file never leaves your device; images are processed in your browser. EXIF and location data are not added to the output.

How to convert BMP to PNG

  1. Add your BMP files

Drag the images onto the upload area or browse for them; you can add several files at once.

  2. Keep PNG as the output

PNG is already selected. For formats with a quality setting the slider starts at 100%; lower it if you want a smaller file.

  3. Convert and download

Press “Convert”. Every file is processed in your browser, and you can download the results one by one or as a ZIP.

What is preserved?

Kept

  • The image resolution (pixel dimensions)
  • The correct photo orientation (EXIF orientation is applied)
  • Colors (adapted to sRGB)

Not carried over

  • EXIF, location and camera data: left out of the output for privacy

When to use it

Keep exact pixels in less space

For screenshots, diagrams and pixel art, PNG gives you a pixel-exact copy of the BMP at a fraction of the size.

Modernize old image archives

BMP files from legacy software are poorly supported on the web. PNG is accepted nearly everywhere and is easy to edit.

Limitations to know

  • Up to 50 MB per file; the output can be at most 16,384 pixels on one side.
  • On iPhone and iPad, images above roughly 16 megapixels may not be processed because of a browser limit.

About the formats

What is BMP?

BMP is a bitmap format that stores pixels with little or no compression, so files are large. It is simple and widely supported by Windows software but rarely used on the web; PNG gives the same pixel-exact result in a much smaller file.

What is PNG?

PNG stores pixels without loss and supports full transparency, which makes it a good fit for screenshots, logos and graphics with sharp edges or text. The price is size: photographs saved as PNG are usually much larger than the same picture as JPG or WebP. PNG does not store animations.

Frequently asked questions

Is any quality lost converting BMP to PNG?

No. PNG is lossless: the pixels are stored exactly, only in a compressed container.

Why is the PNG smaller than the BMP?

BMP stores raw pixel data, while PNG compresses it without loss. Flat colors and repeating patterns shrink the most.

What about photographs?

A photographic BMP also becomes smaller as a PNG, but a JPG would be much smaller still; use BMP to JPG when a lossless copy is not required.

Is converting BMP to PNG free?

Yes, completely free. There is no account, subscription or watermark; just add your files and convert them.

Are my files uploaded anywhere?

No. Images are processed in your browser and never leave your device, so the waiting time depends on the file size and your device. EXIF and location data are not added to the output.
