PNG to AVIF Converter

To convert PNG to AVIF, add your PNG images and press Convert with AVIF selected. AVIF keeps the transparency of the PNG and can be a fraction of its size, which is ideal for logos, UI graphics and screenshots on fast websites. AVIF encoding is slower than other formats, and everything runs in your browser so nothing is uploaded.

  • Free, no sign-up
  • Your file never leaves your device
  • Up to 50 MB per file
Output format

Your file never leaves your device; images are processed in your browser. EXIF and location data are not added to the output.

How to convert PNG to AVIF

  1. Add your PNG files

Drag the images onto the upload area or browse for them; you can add several files at once.

  2. Keep AVIF as the output

AVIF is already selected. For formats with a quality setting the slider starts at 100%; lower it if you want a smaller file.

  3. Convert and download

Press “Convert”. Every file is processed in your browser, and you can download the results one by one or as a ZIP.

What is preserved?

Kept

  • The image resolution (pixel dimensions)
  • The correct photo orientation (EXIF orientation is applied)
  • Colors (adapted to sRGB)
  • Transparency (alpha channel)

Changed

  • AVIF is a lossy format: lower quality means a smaller file but less fine detail
  • The lossless source is recompressed at the quality you choose, so pixel values are no longer identical

Not carried over

  • EXIF, location and camera data: left out of the output for privacy

When to use it

Trim image weight on a website

Large PNG illustrations and screenshots are among the heaviest assets on many pages. AVIF versions load much faster.

Transparent graphics at a small size

Unlike JPG, AVIF supports transparency, so product cut-outs and logos can keep their clean edges at a smaller size.

Limitations to know

  • Up to 50 MB per file; the output can be at most 16,384 pixels on one side.
  • On iPhone and iPad, images above roughly 16 megapixels may not be processed because of a browser limit.

About the formats

What is PNG?

PNG stores pixels without loss and supports full transparency, which makes it a good fit for screenshots, logos and graphics with sharp edges or text. The price is size: photographs saved as PNG are usually much larger than the same picture as JPG or WebP. PNG does not store animations.

What is AVIF?

AVIF is a modern image format based on the AV1 video codec. It delivers very small files at high visual quality, supports transparency, HDR and animation, and is among the most efficient formats for the web. Encoding is slower than for other formats, and some older software cannot open AVIF yet.

Frequently asked questions

Does AVIF keep the transparent background?

Yes. AVIF supports an alpha channel, so transparent and semi-transparent areas carry over.

Is it lossless?

No. AVIF here is lossy; lower quality settings soften fine detail and sharp text edges. Use a high quality value, or stay with PNG when pixel accuracy matters.

Will every app open the result?

Current browsers do. Some older programs and print services do not support AVIF, in which case convert it back to PNG with the AVIF to PNG converter.

How long does encoding take?

AVIF is the slowest format to create, and the time depends on image size and your device. Large screenshots can take several seconds.

Is converting PNG to AVIF free?

Yes, completely free. There is no account, subscription or watermark; just add your files and convert them.

Are my files uploaded anywhere?

No. Images are processed in your browser and never leave your device, so the waiting time depends on the file size and your device. EXIF and location data are not added to the output.
