Remove Image Background Online
To remove a background, add your image, pick a method and press the button. AI finds the subject on its own: the image is uploaded to our servers over a secure connection, processed there and deleted within 30 minutes at the latest. Color key removes one background color you pick with the eyedropper and runs entirely in your browser, so the image never leaves your device. Either way you can fine-tune the result with erase and restore brushes and download it as PNG, WebP, AVIF or JPG.
- Free, no sign-up
- Color key mode stays on your device
- AI mode is deleted within 30 minutes
How to remove the background from an image
Add your image
Drag one image onto the upload area. It opens in the editor, and a checkerboard shows which areas are transparent.
Choose a method and fine-tune
AI finds the subject automatically; the image is uploaded to our servers and deleted within 30 minutes. Color key removes a background color you pick and runs entirely on your device. Use the erase and restore brushes to fix the details.
Choose the format and download
Pick PNG, WebP or AVIF to keep the transparency, or JPG with a background color, and download the result.
What is preserved?
Kept
- The pixel dimensions of the image (very large images are reduced for editing, and the notice shows the size)
- The colors of the subject
- Transparency in PNG, WebP and AVIF output
Changed
- The removed area becomes transparent; JPG output fills it with the background color you choose
- In AI mode the cut-out edge is an estimate, so hair and fine details may need a touch of the brushes
Not carried over
- EXIF, location and camera data: left out of the output for privacy
- Animation: only the first frame of GIF, WebP and AVIF files is used
When to use it
Product photos for shops and listings
Cut a product out of a busy background to get the clean, plain look that marketplaces and catalogs ask for, then save it as a transparent PNG or on white as a JPG.
Logos and graphics on flat backgrounds
For a logo or icon on a solid color, the color key mode removes the background instantly on your device, with a tolerance and edge smoothing you control.
Portraits, stickers and presentations
Remove the background behind a person or an object to place it on a slide, a poster or a design, and use the brushes to tidy hair or small gaps.
Limitations to know
- Background removal works with one image at a time, up to 50 MB.
- AI mode uploads the image to our servers and deletes it within 30 minutes; color key mode never uploads anything.
- Color key works best on flat, evenly colored backgrounds; for photographs with complex backgrounds use AI mode.
- Very large images are reduced to about 16 megapixels so that editing stays smooth on your device.
Frequently asked questions
What is the difference between AI and color key?
AI looks at the whole picture and decides what the subject is, so it suits photographs of people, products and animals. Color key removes one color you pick and is best for logos, icons and flat backgrounds; it is instant and stays on your device.
How do I fix parts that were removed or kept by mistake?
Use the Erase brush to remove more and the Restore brush to bring parts back. Drag over the picture with the mouse or your finger, change the brush size with the slider, and use Undo for the last stroke.
Which format keeps the transparency?
PNG, WebP and AVIF can all be transparent. JPG cannot, so when you choose JPG the removed area is filled with a background color you pick.
Why does the color key leave a colored edge?
Edge pixels mix the subject with the old background. Raise the edge smoothing and the tolerance a little, and keep “only remove areas connected to the edges” on so that colors inside the subject stay.
Is this tool free?
Yes, completely free. There is no account, subscription or watermark.
Are my files uploaded anywhere?
It depends on the method. In AI mode the image is uploaded over an encrypted (HTTPS) connection to our servers, processed there and permanently deleted within 30 minutes at the latest. In Color key mode the image is processed in your browser and never leaves your device. EXIF and location data are not added to the result.
