WebP to GIF Converter
To convert WebP to GIF, add your WebP files, choose GIF and press Convert. The image is reduced to at most 256 colors and fully transparent areas stay transparent. An animated WebP is not turned into an animated GIF: only its first frame is saved as a still GIF. The conversion runs in your browser, so the WebP never leaves your device.
- Free, no sign-up
- Your file never leaves your device
- Up to 50 MB per file
GIF uses at most 256 colors, so there is no quality setting.
Your file never leaves your device; images are processed in your browser. EXIF and location data are not added to the output.
How to convert WebP to GIF
Add your WebP files
Drag the images onto the upload area or browse for them; you can add several files at once.
Keep GIF as the output
GIF is already selected. For formats with a quality setting the slider starts at a default that suits the format (JPG 90%, WebP 80%, AVIF 60%); lower it if you want a smaller file.
Convert and download
Press “Convert”. Every file is processed in your browser, and you can download the results one by one or as a ZIP.
What is preserved?
Kept
- The image resolution (pixel dimensions)
- The correct photo orientation (EXIF orientation is applied)
- Colors (adapted to sRGB)
Changed
- GIF is lossless, but the loss already introduced by WebP compression does not come back; the file usually gets larger
- Semi-transparent areas become on/off transparency, so edges can look jagged
- Colors are reduced to at most 256
Not carried over
- EXIF, location and camera data: left out of the output for privacy
- Motion: only the first frame is converted
When to use it
Post a web image where WebP is refused
Some chat apps, forums and older content systems still reject WebP uploads. A GIF version of a sticker or simple graphic gets through.
Reuse a WebP sticker as a static GIF
Sticker packs and emoji are often shared as WebP. Converting one to GIF gives a still image that older messaging tools and e-mail clients show correctly.
Limitations to know
- For animated WebP files only the first frame is converted.
- Up to 50 MB per file; the output can be at most 16,384 pixels on one side.
- On iPhone and iPad, images above roughly 16 megapixels may not be processed because of a browser limit.
About the formats
What is WebP?
WebP is an image format developed by Google for the web. It supports both lossy and lossless compression, transparency and animation, and typically produces smaller files than JPG or PNG at similar quality. All current browsers display WebP, though some older editors and print services cannot open it.
What is GIF?
GIF is an image format from 1987 limited to 256 colors per image. It supports simple on/off transparency and short animations, which is why it is still used for small graphics and looping clips. For photographs it is a poor choice, because the color limit causes visible banding.
Frequently asked questions
Will my animated WebP stay animated?
No. This conversion takes the first frame only and the GIF is a still image. Moving GIF output is only available when the source itself is an animated GIF, on the resize, compress and crop tools.
Why do WebP photos look grainy as GIF?
WebP can show millions of colors, GIF only 256. To imitate the missing shades, the converter mixes nearby palette colors, which reads as grain or banding in photos.
Are soft edges from a transparent WebP kept?
Not fully. WebP supports gradual transparency, GIF only fully visible or fully transparent pixels, so feathered edges become hard outlines.
Is converting WebP to GIF free?
Yes, completely free. There is no account, subscription or watermark; just add your files and convert them.
Are my files uploaded anywhere?
No. Images are processed in your browser and never leave your device, so the waiting time depends on the file size and your device. EXIF and location data are not added to the output.
