What is preserved?
Kept
- How each page looks: text, graphics and images are drawn as in a PDF viewer
- The page proportions; the pixel size depends on the DPI you choose
Changed
- Each page becomes a flat WebP picture at the DPI you choose: 72 for screens, 150 as a balance, 300 for print
- Several pages are delivered together as a ZIP file (page-01, page-02 …); a single page comes back as one image
- WebP is lossy: lower quality makes smaller files with less fine detail
Not carried over
- Selectable and searchable text: the pages become pictures
- Links, form fields, bookmarks and other interactive parts
- Transparency: pages are drawn on white
When to use it
Show document pages on a website
Embedding a PDF is clumsy on phones. WebP images of the pages, such as a menu, flyer or price list, load fast and display in every current browser.
Page previews for a document library
Generate a light WebP of the first page of each PDF to use as a thumbnail in a download list or intranet.
Limitations to know
- Up to 50 MB per PDF and up to 50 pages at a time; choose a page range for longer documents.
- Password-protected and damaged PDFs cannot be converted.
- A page larger than about 100 megapixels at the chosen DPI is refused; pick a lower DPI.
- The PDF is uploaded to our servers and deleted within 30 minutes.
About the formats
What is PDF?
PDF is a document format that looks the same on every device and in print. A page can contain text, vector graphics and images, and a file can have many pages. Converting PDF pages to images turns each page into a flat picture you can place on a website or in a design, while converting images to PDF packs pictures into pages of one document.
What is WebP?
WebP is an image format developed by Google for the web. It supports both lossy and lossless compression, transparency and animation, and typically produces smaller files than JPG or PNG at similar quality. All current browsers display WebP, though some older editors and print services cannot open it.
Frequently asked questions
Which DPI should I use for WebP page images?
150 DPI is usually right for showing pages on screens; 72 DPI is enough for small thumbnails. 300 DPI makes sense only when visitors need to zoom into small print.
Is WebP a good format for pages with text?
Yes, at high quality WebP keeps text readable while staying much smaller than PNG. Lower the quality only for pages that are mainly photos.
Is there a size limit for the PDF?
The PDF can be up to 50 MB and you can convert up to 50 pages per run. Split larger documents and convert them in parts.
Is converting PDF to WebP free?
Yes, completely free. There is no account, subscription or watermark; just add your files and convert them.
Are my files uploaded anywhere?
Yes. This conversion runs on our servers, so your PDF is uploaded over an encrypted (HTTPS) connection, converted there and permanently deleted within 30 minutes at the latest. It is stored under a random code instead of its name, and processing is fully automated. EXIF and location data are not added to the output.
