When to use it

Hidden formatting often causes trouble when you paste a ruling or petition into an email, case management software or a web form. The TXT output contains only clean text that pastes anywhere without surprises.
Search, archiving and AI tools
Plain text is the lightest and most compatible option when you want to archive many rulings, run keyword searches across them, or feed the text to an AI assistant for summarising or analysis.
Limitations to know
- You can turn TXT back into UDF, but lost formatting and images will not come back.
- For e-signed documents, signature validation does not carry over to the new file; re-sign in UYAP for official use.
About the formats
What is UDF?
UDF is the document format of UYAP (Ulusal Yargı Ağı Bilişim Sistemi), Turkey's national judiciary information system. Lawyers, courts and enforcement offices create petitions, minutes and rulings in this format with the UYAP Document Editor. A .udf file is a ZIP package whose content.xml holds the full text, paragraph and character styles, tables and embedded images. It is unrelated to Universal Disk Format, and Word or PDF readers cannot open it directly.
What is TXT?
A TXT file contains characters only, with no formatting, images or page layout information. It opens in every program from Notepad to code editors and is the smallest and most portable kind of document. Whether accented and non-Latin characters display correctly depends on the character encoding; UTF-8, today's standard, handles virtually every language. Plain text is ideal for searching, archiving and moving content between systems.
Frequently asked questions
Will Turkish characters display correctly in the TXT file?
Yes. The file is saved as UTF-8 with a byte order mark, so current editors, including Windows Notepad, show ç, ğ, ı, İ, ö, ş and ü correctly. If a very old program shows garbled characters, choose UTF-8 as the encoding when you open the file.
How do UDF tables look in plain text?
Each table row is written on its own line and the cells are separated by tab characters. Because of this, pasting the text into Excel or another spreadsheet usually puts the cells into the right columns. Borders, merged cells and colours are not represented in plain text.
Should I use TXT or Markdown to get the text out?
TXT is enough when you only need readable text. If you want to keep bold and italic emphasis, lists and tables as lightweight markup, for example for a notes app or an AI assistant that benefits from structure, convert the UDF to Markdown instead.
