When you add meeting notes or short descriptions to a GitHub, GitLab or wiki repository as .md, dashes and hash signs in the text display literally instead of triggering unexpected formatting.
Starting work in a Markdown editor
If you plan to continue in Obsidian, Typora or another Markdown editor, convert the plain draft to .md first and then add your own headings and lists with deliberate Markdown syntax.
Limitations to know
- If the text already uses Markdown syntax, this tool neutralises it; renaming the file to .md is the better route.
- Headings, lists and links are not generated automatically.

What is TXT?
A TXT file contains characters only, with no formatting, images or page layout information. It opens in every program from Notepad to code editors and is the smallest and most portable kind of document. Whether accented and non-Latin characters display correctly depends on the character encoding; UTF-8, today's standard, handles virtually every language. Plain text is ideal for searching, archiving and moving content between systems.
What is Markdown (MD)?
Markdown is a lightweight markup language designed by John Gruber in 2004. Formatting is written as simple symbols inside plain text: # for headings, ** for bold, - for list items and | for tables. Markdown (.md) files are everywhere in GitHub READMEs, technical documentation, note-taking apps and AI assistant output. The most widely used flavour is GitHub Flavored Markdown (GFM), which adds tables, task lists and strikethrough.
Frequently asked questions
My .txt file already contains Markdown. Should I convert it?
No. If the file already uses # headings and - list items, just change the extension from .txt to .md. This converter is designed to keep plain text literal, so it escapes Markdown markers at the start of lines and your headings would appear as \# Heading instead of being rendered.
Why is there a blank line between every line?
In Markdown, two consecutive lines are merged into a single paragraph. To keep each line of your .txt separate, the converter writes every line as its own paragraph, and Markdown paragraphs are separated by a blank line. When the file is rendered, your original line layout is preserved.
Can I convert the Markdown to PDF or HTML afterwards?
Yes. After adding headings and lists to the downloaded .md file, run it through the Markdown to PDF or Markdown to HTML converter. That gives you a two-step path from a plain text draft to a formatted document with real headings, lists and tables.
