AVIF to GIF Converter
To convert AVIF to GIF, add the AVIF files, choose GIF and press Convert. The picture is mapped to a palette of up to 256 colors, and fully transparent pixels stay transparent. An animated AVIF is not converted into a moving GIF; only the first frame is saved. GIF has no quality slider. The conversion runs in your browser and the file never leaves your device.
- Free, no sign-up
- Your file never leaves your device
- Up to 50 MB per file
GIF uses at most 256 colors, so there is no quality setting.
Your file never leaves your device; images are processed in your browser. EXIF and location data are not added to the output.
How to convert AVIF to GIF
Add your AVIF files
Drag the images onto the upload area or browse for them; you can add several files at once.
Keep GIF as the output
GIF is already selected. For formats with a quality setting the slider starts at a default that suits the format (JPG 90%, WebP 80%, AVIF 60%); lower it if you want a smaller file.
Convert and download
Press “Convert”. Every file is processed in your browser, and you can download the results one by one or as a ZIP.
What is preserved?
Kept
- The image resolution (pixel dimensions)
- The correct photo orientation (EXIF orientation is applied)
- Colors (adapted to sRGB)
Changed
- GIF is lossless, but the loss already introduced by AVIF compression does not come back; the file usually gets larger
- Semi-transparent areas become on/off transparency, so edges can look jagged
- Colors are reduced to at most 256
Not carried over
- EXIF, location and camera data: left out of the output for privacy
- Motion: only the first frame is converted
When to use it
Open a modern image on an old system
Older computers, thin clients and legacy viewers can show GIF but have never heard of AVIF. A GIF copy makes simple graphics viewable there.
Graphics for retro or minimal websites
Hobby sites and retro-style pages that stick to classic formats can use a GIF version of an AVIF icon or banner.
Limitations to know
- For animated AVIF files only the first frame is converted.
- Up to 50 MB per file; the output can be at most 16,384 pixels on one side.
- On iPhone and iPad, images above roughly 16 megapixels may not be processed because of a browser limit.
About the formats
What is AVIF?
AVIF is a modern image format based on the AV1 video codec. It delivers very small files at high visual quality, supports transparency, HDR and animation, and is among the most efficient formats for the web. Encoding is slower than for other formats, and some older software cannot open AVIF yet.
What is GIF?
GIF is an image format from 1987 limited to 256 colors per image. It supports simple on/off transparency and short animations, which is why it is still used for small graphics and looping clips. For photographs it is a poor choice, because the color limit causes visible banding.
Frequently asked questions
Why does my AVIF photo look banded as a GIF?
AVIF can store very smooth color gradients, often with more than 8 bits per channel, while GIF is limited to 256 colors in total. Gradients are therefore broken into visible steps.
Can an animated AVIF become an animated GIF here?
No. Only the first frame is converted, and the GIF is a still image.
Is GIF a good choice for photographs from AVIF?
Rarely. For photos, AVIF to JPG keeps far more color with a smaller file; use GIF when a platform specifically demands it or the image is a simple graphic.
Is converting AVIF to GIF free?
Yes, completely free. There is no account, subscription or watermark; just add your files and convert them.
Are my files uploaded anywhere?
No. Images are processed in your browser and never leave your device, so the waiting time depends on the file size and your device. EXIF and location data are not added to the output.
