GIF to WebP Converter

To convert GIF to WebP, add your GIF files, choose WebP and press Convert. The first frame is saved as a WebP at 80% quality by default, and its transparent areas stay transparent. Animated WebP output is not available, so a moving GIF becomes a still image. Everything is processed in your browser and the files stay on your device.

  • Free, no sign-up
  • Your file never leaves your device
  • Up to 50 MB per file
Output format

Your file never leaves your device; images are processed in your browser. EXIF and location data are not added to the output.

How to convert GIF to WebP

  1. Add your GIF files

Drag the images onto the upload area or browse for them; you can add several files at once.

  2. Keep WebP as the output

WebP is already selected. For formats with a quality setting the slider starts at a default that suits the format (JPG 90%, WebP 80%, AVIF 60%); lower it if you want a smaller file.

  3. Convert and download

Press “Convert”. Every file is processed in your browser, and you can download the results one by one or as a ZIP.

What is preserved?

Kept

  • The image resolution (pixel dimensions)
  • The correct photo orientation (EXIF orientation is applied)
  • Colors (adapted to sRGB)
  • Transparency (alpha channel)

Changed

  • WebP is a lossy format: lower quality means a smaller file but less fine detail
  • The lossless source is recompressed at the quality you choose, so pixel values are no longer identical

Not carried over

  • EXIF, location and camera data: left out of the output for privacy
  • Motion: only the first frame is converted

When to use it

Lighter static images for a website

Old sites often use GIF for buttons, banners and diagrams. Replacing the still ones with WebP reduces page weight while keeping transparent backgrounds.

Modernize an image library

Converting a folder of non-animated GIF graphics to WebP keeps them usable in modern tools and saves storage at the same time.

Limitations to know

  • For animated GIF files only the first frame is converted. Animated WebP output is not supported.
  • Up to 50 MB per file; the output can be at most 16,384 pixels on one side.
  • On iPhone and iPad, images above roughly 16 megapixels may not be processed because of a browser limit.

About the formats

What is GIF?

GIF is an image format from 1987 limited to 256 colors per image. It supports simple on/off transparency and short animations, which is why it is still used for small graphics and looping clips. For photographs it is a poor choice, because the color limit causes visible banding.

What is WebP?

WebP is an image format developed by Google for the web. It supports both lossy and lossless compression, transparency and animation, and typically produces smaller files than JPG or PNG at similar quality. All current browsers display WebP, though some older editors and print services cannot open it.

Frequently asked questions

Can I get an animated WebP from my GIF?

No. Only the first frame is converted to a still WebP. If you need to make an animation lighter, the compress tool keeps a GIF animated and reduces its size.

Will a flat-color GIF graphic stay sharp in WebP?

At the default 80% quality small soft spots can appear around edges. Raise the quality toward 100% for logos and text, or choose PNG for a pixel-exact copy.

Is the WebP always smaller than the GIF?

Usually, especially for images with gradients or many colors. A tiny GIF with a handful of colors may already be very compact, so the gain can be small.

Is converting GIF to WebP free?

Yes, completely free. There is no account, subscription or watermark; just add your files and convert them.

Are my files uploaded anywhere?

No. Images are processed in your browser and never leave your device, so the waiting time depends on the file size and your device. EXIF and location data are not added to the output.
