JPG to AVIF Converter

To convert JPG to AVIF, add your JPG photos and press Convert with AVIF selected. AVIF can deliver the same visual quality as JPG at a much smaller size, which is useful for fast-loading websites. Encoding AVIF takes longer than other formats, so large photos need a little patience. Everything runs in your browser, so the files never leave your device.

  • Free, no sign-up
  • Your file never leaves your device
  • Up to 50 MB per file
Output format

Your file never leaves your device; images are processed in your browser. EXIF and location data are not added to the output.

How to convert JPG to AVIF

  1. Add your JPG files

Drag the images onto the upload area or browse for them; you can add several files at once.

  2. Keep AVIF as the output

AVIF is already selected. For formats with a quality setting the slider starts at 100%; lower it if you want a smaller file.

  3. Convert and download

Press “Convert”. Every file is processed in your browser, and you can download the results one by one or as a ZIP.

What is preserved?

Kept

  • The image resolution (pixel dimensions)
  • The correct photo orientation (EXIF orientation is applied)
  • Colors (adapted to sRGB)

Changed

  • AVIF is a lossy format: lower quality means a smaller file but less fine detail

Not carried over

  • EXIF, location and camera data: left out of the output for privacy

When to use it

The lightest possible web photos

AVIF is among the most efficient image formats. Converting hero images and galleries from JPG can reduce their weight considerably.

Archive photos in less space

If you keep large collections of photos for viewing on modern devices, AVIF versions take much less storage.

Limitations to know

  • Up to 50 MB per file; the output can be at most 16,384 pixels on one side.
  • On iPhone and iPad, images above roughly 16 megapixels may not be processed because of a browser limit.

About the formats

What is JPG?

JPG (JPEG) is the most widely used photo format. It uses lossy compression: detail the eye notices least is discarded to make files small, and the quality setting trades size against detail. JPG does not support transparency and is not ideal for text or sharp-edged graphics, but nearly every device, app and website opens it.

What is AVIF?

AVIF is a modern image format based on the AV1 video codec. It delivers very small files at high visual quality, supports transparency, HDR and animation, and is among the most efficient formats for the web. Encoding is slower than for other formats, and some older software cannot open AVIF yet.

Frequently asked questions

Why is AVIF conversion slow?

AVIF compression is computationally heavy, and it runs on your own device. Large photos can take several seconds each; a progress message tells you when a file is being encoded.

Which browsers and apps open AVIF?

Current versions of Chrome, Edge, Firefox and Safari display AVIF. Some older editors, printers and upload forms do not, so keep your original JPG too.

What quality should I choose?

For the web, 60–80% is usually enough and gives the smallest files. At the default 100% the AVIF can be bigger than the JPG.

Is EXIF data kept?

No. Camera details and GPS location are not copied into the AVIF.

Is converting JPG to AVIF free?

Yes, completely free. There is no account, subscription or watermark; just add your files and convert them.

Are my files uploaded anywhere?

No. Images are processed in your browser and never leave your device, so the waiting time depends on the file size and your device. EXIF and location data are not added to the output.
