AVIF to PNG Converter

To convert AVIF to PNG, add your AVIF files and press Convert with PNG selected. The result is a lossless PNG that opens in editors and apps that do not support AVIF, and transparent areas stay transparent. The conversion runs in your browser, so nothing is uploaded.

  • Free, no sign-up
  • Your file never leaves your device
  • Up to 50 MB per file
Output format

PNG is a lossless format, so there is no quality setting. File size depends on the resolution and the picture itself.

Your file never leaves your device; images are processed in your browser. EXIF and location data are not added to the output.

How to convert AVIF to PNG

  1. Add your AVIF files

Drag the images onto the upload area or browse for them; you can add several files at once.

  2. Keep PNG as the output

PNG is already selected. For formats with a quality setting the slider starts at 100%; lower it if you want a smaller file.

  3. Convert and download

Press “Convert”. Every file is processed in your browser, and you can download the results one by one or as a ZIP.

What is preserved?

Kept

  • The image resolution (pixel dimensions)
  • The correct photo orientation (EXIF orientation is applied)
  • Colors (adapted to sRGB)
  • Transparency (alpha channel)

Changed

  • PNG is lossless, but the loss already introduced by AVIF compression does not come back; the file usually gets larger

Not carried over

  • EXIF, location and camera data: left out of the output for privacy
  • Motion: only the first frame is converted

When to use it

Edit an AVIF image

Many editors cannot open AVIF yet. A PNG copy gives you a lossless working file that keeps its transparency.

Reuse web graphics

Logos and illustrations saved from websites may be AVIF. Converting them to PNG lets you place them in documents and presentations.

Limitations to know

  • For animated AVIF files only the first frame is converted.
  • Up to 50 MB per file; the output can be at most 16,384 pixels on one side.
  • On iPhone and iPad, images above roughly 16 megapixels may not be processed because of a browser limit.

About the formats

What is AVIF?

AVIF is a modern image format based on the AV1 video codec. It delivers very small files at high visual quality, supports transparency, HDR and animation, and is among the most efficient formats for the web. Encoding is slower than for other formats, and some older software cannot open AVIF yet.

What is PNG?

PNG stores pixels without loss and supports full transparency, which makes it a good fit for screenshots, logos and graphics with sharp edges or text. The price is size: photographs saved as PNG are usually much larger than the same picture as JPG or WebP. PNG does not store animations.

Frequently asked questions

Does the PNG keep the transparency?

Yes. PNG supports a full alpha channel, so transparent and semi-transparent areas of the AVIF are preserved.

Why is the PNG so much larger?

AVIF is one of the most efficient formats, while PNG stores pixels without lossy compression. A PNG is often many times larger than the AVIF it came from. If size matters, convert to JPG or WebP instead.

Is anything lost?

The PNG itself adds no loss. Any loss from the original AVIF compression stays in the picture.

What about bit depth or HDR?

The output is a standard 8-bit sRGB PNG, so extra color depth or HDR information in the AVIF is reduced to standard colors.

Is converting AVIF to PNG free?

Yes, completely free. There is no account, subscription or watermark; just add your files and convert them.

Are my files uploaded anywhere?

No. Images are processed in your browser and never leave your device, so the waiting time depends on the file size and your device. EXIF and location data are not added to the output.
