PDF to Word Converter Online (DOCX)

To convert a PDF to Word, upload the PDF, choose Word (DOCX) as the output and start the conversion. Our server extracts the text with Poppler, rebuilds paragraphs, headings and bulleted or numbered lists, keeps embedded images and returns an editable .docx file. Scanned, image-only PDFs have no text layer, so they need OCR before they can be converted.

What is preserved?

Kept

  • Body text in reading order
  • Headings detected from font size
  • Bulleted and numbered lists
  • Images embedded in the PDF

Changed

  • Fixed page layout becomes flowing text; columns and text boxes are not kept
  • Fonts not installed on our server are replaced with close equivalents

Not carried over

  • Table structure: cell text arrives as paragraphs
  • Full-page background images

When to use it

Edit a document you only have as a PDF

When a contract draft, report or form arrives as a PDF and the original Word file is gone, converting it to DOCX lets you change wording, fix typos and save a new version without retyping everything.

Reuse long passages without broken line breaks

Copying text straight out of a PDF usually leaves a hard break at the end of every line. The Word output joins those lines back into real paragraphs, so the text flows properly in your own template.

Limitations to know

  • No OCR: scanned PDFs produce no text.
  • Password-protected PDFs are rejected until the password is removed.
  • Maximum file size is 100 MB.

About the formats

What is PDF?

PDF (Portable Document Format) is a fixed-layout document format created by Adobe and standardised as ISO 32000. Every piece of text, image and line is stored with its position on the page, so a PDF looks the same on every device and prints reliably. The trade-off is editing: a PDF stores positions on a page, not paragraphs and tables. Scanned PDFs contain only page images and need OCR before any text can be extracted.

What is Word (DOCX)?

DOCX is the default document format of Microsoft Word since Word 2007. It is based on the Office Open XML standard: the file is a ZIP package that stores text, styles, tables, images, headers and footers as separate XML parts. DOCX files open and edit in Word, LibreOffice Writer, Google Docs and Pages, which makes it the most common format for exchanging editable documents. When a fixed layout matters, DOCX files are usually converted to PDF.

Frequently asked questions

Can I convert a scanned PDF to Word?

No. A scanned PDF is a set of page photos with no selectable text, and this service does not run OCR (optical character recognition). The conversion will fail with an empty-output error. Run the file through an OCR tool first so it has a text layer, then convert it here.

Will tables in my PDF become Word tables?

No. A PDF stores a table as pieces of text placed at fixed positions, not as rows and cells, and our converter does not rebuild tables from that. The cell text is carried into the Word document as ordinary paragraphs, so complex tables need to be recreated by hand.

Is the output DOCX or the older DOC format?

This page produces a modern .docx file, which opens in Word 2007 and later, LibreOffice, Google Docs and Pages. If you need the legacy Word 97-2003 .doc format for an older system, use the PDF to DOC converter instead.

Why won't my password-protected PDF convert?

The content of an encrypted PDF cannot be read without its password, so the server rejects it with a message saying the PDF is encrypted. Open the file in a PDF reader with the password, save an unprotected copy and upload that copy instead.

Is converting PDF to Word free?

Yes, completely free. There is no account, subscription or watermark — just upload your file and convert it.

Is my file safe and when is it deleted?

Your file is transferred over HTTPS and stored on our server under a random code. The upload and the output are permanently deleted within 30 minutes, and the download link only works for whoever holds your unique code.
