GIF to BMP Converter

To convert GIF to BMP, add your GIF files, choose BMP and press Convert. The first frame is written as an uncompressed bitmap. Because BMP has no transparency, transparent pixels are filled with white by default or with any background color you choose. There is no quality setting. The conversion is done in your browser, so the GIF stays on your device.

  • Free, no sign-up
  • Your file never leaves your device
  • Up to 50 MB per file
Output format

BMP is uncompressed, so there is no quality setting.

BMP does not support transparency; transparent areas are filled with this color.

Your file never leaves your device; images are processed in your browser. EXIF and location data are not added to the output.

How to convert GIF to BMP

  1. Add your GIF files

Drag the images onto the upload area or browse for them; you can add several files at once.

  2. Keep BMP as the output

BMP is already selected. For formats with a quality setting the slider starts at a default that suits the format (JPG 90%, WebP 80%, AVIF 60%); lower it if you want a smaller file.

  3. Convert and download

Press “Convert”. Every file is processed in your browser, and you can download the results one by one or as a ZIP.

What is preserved?

Kept

  • The image resolution (pixel dimensions)
  • The correct photo orientation (EXIF orientation is applied)
  • Colors (adapted to sRGB)

Not carried over

  • Transparency: BMP does not support it, so transparent areas are filled with the background color you pick (white by default)
  • EXIF, location and camera data: left out of the output for privacy
  • Motion: only the first frame is converted

When to use it

Load old graphics into legacy software

Clip art, icons and diagrams from the early web are often GIF, while old drawing and layout programs prefer BMP. Converting bridges the two.

Pixel art for hardware projects

LED matrix tools and simple display drivers often read BMP. A small pixel-art GIF converted to BMP keeps every pixel exactly.

Limitations to know

  • For animated GIF files only the first frame is converted.
  • Up to 50 MB per file; the output can be at most 16,384 pixels on one side.
  • On iPhone and iPad, images above roughly 16 megapixels may not be processed because of a browser limit.

About the formats

What is GIF?

GIF is an image format from 1987 limited to 256 colors per image. It supports simple on/off transparency and short animations, which is why it is still used for small graphics and looping clips. For photographs it is a poor choice, because the color limit causes visible banding.

What is BMP?

BMP is a bitmap format that stores pixels with little or no compression, so files are large. It is simple and widely supported by Windows software but rarely used on the web; PNG gives the same pixel-exact result in a much smaller file.

Frequently asked questions

Are the GIF's pixels changed in BMP?

No. The first frame is copied pixel for pixel; only fully transparent pixels take the background color, since BMP cannot leave them empty.

Why is a tiny GIF a much bigger BMP?

GIF stores a compressed palette image, BMP raw pixels. Even a few kilobytes of GIF can become hundreds of kilobytes as BMP.

Can I convert every frame of an animated GIF?

No, only the first frame is converted. The rest of the animation is not exported.

Is converting GIF to BMP free?

Yes, completely free. There is no account, subscription or watermark; just add your files and convert them.

Are my files uploaded anywhere?

No. Images are processed in your browser and never leave your device, so the waiting time depends on the file size and your device. EXIF and location data are not added to the output.
