PNG to ICO Converter

To convert PNG to ICO, add your PNG, keep ICO selected and press Convert. The result is a single ICO file holding square icons of 16, 32 and 48 pixels (and 64, 128 and 256 pixels when the image is large enough); transparent areas stay transparent. A non-square image is fitted inside a square without distortion. The conversion runs in your browser, so your PNG never leaves your device.

  • Free, no sign-up
  • Your file never leaves your device
  • Up to 50 MB per file
Output format

ICO is lossless, so there is no quality setting. The file holds square icons of 16, 32 and 48 pixels (plus 64, 128 and 256 when the image is large enough).

Your file never leaves your device; images are processed in your browser. EXIF and location data are not added to the output.

How to convert PNG to ICO

  1. Add your PNG files

Drag the images onto the upload area or browse for them; you can add several files at once.

  2. Keep ICO as the output

ICO is already selected. For formats with a quality setting the slider starts at 100%; lower it if you want a smaller file.

  3. Convert and download

Press “Convert”. Every file is processed in your browser, and you can download the results one by one or as a ZIP.

What is preserved?

Kept

  • The image proportions (a non-square image is fitted inside a square)
  • The correct photo orientation (EXIF orientation is applied)
  • Colors (adapted to sRGB)
  • Transparency (alpha channel)

Changed

  • The image does not stay at a single size: it is scaled to square icons of 16, 32 and 48 pixels (plus 64, 128 and 256 when it is large enough) and packed into one ICO file; a non-square image leaves empty space on the sides

Not carried over

  • EXIF, location and camera data: left out of the output for privacy

When to use it

A favicon.ico for your website

Many browsers, crawlers and older systems request favicon.ico from the root of a site. Converting your logo's PNG to ICO and uploading it under that name makes your icon show up in tabs and bookmarks.

Windows shortcuts and program icons

Desktop shortcuts and small Windows programs expect an ICO. The multi-size file lets Windows pick the right size for small or large icon views.

Limitations to know

  • ICO is at most 256 × 256 pixels, so larger images are scaled down. If you need a full set for a website (Apple and Android icons, manifest), use the Favicon generator.
  • Up to 50 MB per file; the output can be at most 16,384 pixels on one side.
  • On iPhone and iPad, images above roughly 16 megapixels may not be processed because of a browser limit.

About the formats

What is PNG?

PNG stores pixels without loss and supports full transparency, which makes it a good fit for screenshots, logos and graphics with sharp edges or text. The price is size: photographs saved as PNG are usually much larger than the same picture as JPG or WebP. PNG does not store animations.

What is ICO?

ICO is an icon format that stores several square sizes (for example 16, 32 and 48 pixels) in a single file. It is used for Windows icons and for a website's favicon.ico; when a browser needs a small tab icon it picks the matching size from the file. It supports transparency, but cannot be larger than 256 × 256 pixels.

Frequently asked questions

Which sizes does the ICO file contain?

Every conversion writes square icons of 16, 32 and 48 pixels; when your image is at least 64, 128 or 256 pixels wide, those sizes are added too. The browser or Windows picks the size it needs from inside the file.

What should my PNG look like for the best result?

Use a square, simple PNG of at least 256 × 256 pixels. Thin lines and small text become unreadable at 16 pixels; bold, high-contrast logos hold up best at small sizes.

What happens to a non-square PNG?

The image is not stretched: it is placed in the middle of a square with its proportions kept, and the remaining edges stay transparent. If you want a perfect square, crop it to a square first with the crop tool.

Is an ICO file enough for a website?

No. A modern site also needs an Apple Touch Icon for the iPhone home screen, 192 and 512 pixel icons for Android and a manifest file. The Favicon generator produces all of them in one go.

Is converting PNG to ICO free?

Yes, completely free. There is no account, subscription or watermark; just add your files and convert them.

Are my files uploaded anywhere?

No. Images are processed in your browser and never leave your device, so the waiting time depends on the file size and your device. EXIF and location data are not added to the output.
