How to convert GIF to HEIC
Add your GIF files
Drag the files onto the upload area or browse for them; you can add several files and they are converted one after another.
Keep HEIC as the output
HEIC is already selected. The quality slider starts at a default that suits the format (JPG 90%, WebP 80%, AVIF 60%, HEIC 80%); lower it if you want an even smaller file.
Convert and download
Press “Convert”. Each file is uploaded to our servers, converted and deleted within 5 minutes after you download the result; download the results one by one or as a ZIP.
What is preserved?
Kept
- The image resolution (pixel dimensions)
- The correct photo orientation (EXIF orientation is applied)
- Colors (adapted to sRGB)
- Transparency (alpha channel)
Changed
- HEIC is a lossy format: lower quality means a smaller file but less fine detail
- The lossless source is recompressed at the quality you choose, so pixel values are no longer identical
Not carried over
- EXIF, location and camera data: left out of the output for privacy
- Motion: only the first frame is converted
When to use it
Turn a GIF into a still picture
When you only need one frame of a GIF, for example as a cover image, converting gives you a single still HEIC image.
Store old GIF graphics on an iPhone
Old banners, scans and graphics saved as GIF can be kept in Photos alongside your other images in Apple's format.
Limitations to know
- For animated GIF files only the first frame is converted.
- Up to 200 MB and about 100 megapixels per file.
- The file is uploaded to our servers and deleted within 5 minutes after you download the result; several files are converted one after another.
About the formats
What is GIF?
GIF is an image format from 1987 limited to 256 colors per image. It supports simple on/off transparency and short animations, which is why it is still used for small graphics and looping clips. For photographs it is a poor choice, because the color limit causes visible banding.
What is HEIC?
HEIC (also called HEIF) is the photo format that iPhones and many recent cameras use by default. It stores photos in about half the space of a JPG at similar quality and supports transparency and several images in one file. Web browsers and many programs cannot open it, which is why HEIC photos are usually converted to JPG, PNG or WebP before they are shared.
Frequently asked questions
Can I keep the animation of my GIF in HEIC?
No. This converter creates a single still HEIC image from the first frame. For moving pictures, keep the GIF or convert it to WebP on our GIF to WebP page.
Will the HEIC have more colors than the GIF?
No. A GIF holds at most 256 colors, and colors that are missing from it do not come back when the image is converted.
Is the GIF's transparent background kept?
Yes. Areas that are transparent in the GIF stay transparent in the HEIC image.
Is converting GIF to HEIC free?
Yes, completely free. There is no account, subscription or watermark; just add your files and convert them.
Are my files uploaded anywhere?
Yes. This conversion runs on our servers, so your file is uploaded over an encrypted (HTTPS) connection, converted there and deleted as soon as the conversion finishes; the result is permanently deleted within 5 minutes after you download it, or 10 minutes after the conversion finishes if you never download it. Files are saved under a random code instead of their name, and processing is fully automated. EXIF and location data are not added to the output.
