What is preserved?

Kept

  • How each page looks: text, graphics and images are drawn as in a PDF viewer
  • The page proportions; the pixel size depends on the DPI you choose

Changed

  • Each page becomes a flat TIFF picture at the DPI you choose: 72 for screens, 150 as a balance, 300 for print
  • Several pages are delivered together as a ZIP file (page-01, page-02 …); a single page comes back as one image
  • TIFF is lossless, so pages at 300 DPI can produce large files

Not carried over

  • Selectable and searchable text: the pages become pictures
  • Links, form fields, bookmarks and other interactive parts
  • Transparency: pages are drawn on white

When to use it

Fax, archive and document systems

Many document management, archiving and fax systems take TIFF images rather than PDF. Converting each page gives them files they can store.

Pages for print and layout work

A page rendered at 300 DPI as TIFF can be placed in a layout program or sent to a printer that wants raster images.

Limitations to know

  • Up to 200 MB per PDF and up to 50 pages at a time; choose a page range for longer documents.
  • Password-protected and damaged PDFs cannot be converted.
  • A page larger than about 100 megapixels at the chosen DPI is refused; pick a lower DPI.
  • The PDF is uploaded to our servers and deleted within 5 minutes after you download the result.

About the formats

What is PDF?

PDF is a document format that looks the same on every device and in print. A page can contain text, vector graphics and images, and a file can have many pages. Converting PDF pages to images turns each page into a flat picture you can place on a website or in a design, while converting images to PDF packs pictures into pages of one document.

What is TIFF?

TIFF is a high-quality image format used for scans, professional photography and printing. It typically stores pixels without lossy compression and can hold high color depth and several pages in one file, so files are very large. Web browsers do not display TIFF, so it is converted to JPG or PNG for sharing and publishing.

Frequently asked questions

Do I get one multi-page TIFF?

No. Every page is saved as a separate single-page TIFF, and several pages are downloaded together as a ZIP file.

Can I still select the text in the TIFF?

No. The page is turned into a picture, so text can no longer be selected or searched. Keep the PDF if you need the text.

Which PDF files cannot be converted to TIFF?

Password-protected or damaged PDFs, and files above 200 MB. Up to 50 pages are converted at a time, so choose a page range for longer documents.

Is converting PDF to TIFF free?

Yes, completely free. There is no account, subscription or watermark; just add your files and convert them.

Are my files uploaded anywhere?

Yes. This conversion runs on our servers, so your PDF is uploaded over an encrypted (HTTPS) connection, converted there and deleted as soon as the conversion finishes; the result is permanently deleted within 5 minutes after you download it, or 10 minutes after the conversion finishes if you never download it. Files are saved under a random code instead of their name, and processing is fully automated. EXIF and location data are not added to the output.
