How to convert PNG to HEIC
Add your PNG files
Drag the files onto the upload area or browse for them; you can add several files and they are converted one after another.
Keep HEIC as the output
HEIC is already selected. The quality slider starts at a default that suits the format (JPG 90%, WebP 80%, AVIF 60%, HEIC 80%); lower it if you want an even smaller file.
Convert and download
Press “Convert”. Each file is uploaded to our servers, converted and deleted within 5 minutes after you download the result; download the results one by one or as a ZIP.
What is preserved?
Kept
- The image resolution (pixel dimensions)
- The correct photo orientation (EXIF orientation is applied)
- Colors (adapted to sRGB)
- Transparency (alpha channel)
Changed
- HEIC is a lossy format: lower quality means a smaller file but less fine detail
- The lossless source is recompressed at the quality you choose, so pixel values are no longer identical
Not carried over
- EXIF, location and camera data: left out of the output for privacy
When to use it
Shrink large PNG photos
Photos saved as PNG are often several times larger than they need to be. HEIC keeps them looking almost the same at a fraction of the size.
Transparent images for Apple apps
Cut-out images and stickers keep their transparent background in HEIC, which Photos, Preview and Keynote on Apple devices open directly.
Limitations to know
- Up to 200 MB and about 100 megapixels per file.
- The file is uploaded to our servers and deleted within 5 minutes after you download the result; several files are converted one after another.
About the formats
What is PNG?
PNG stores pixels without loss and supports full transparency, which makes it a good fit for screenshots, logos and graphics with sharp edges or text. The price is size: photographs saved as PNG are usually much larger than the same picture as JPG or WebP. PNG does not store animations.
What is HEIC?
HEIC (also called HEIF) is the photo format that iPhones and many recent cameras use by default. It stores photos in about half the space of a JPG at similar quality and supports transparency and several images in one file. Web browsers and many programs cannot open it, which is why HEIC photos are usually converted to JPG, PNG or WebP before they are shared.
Frequently asked questions
Is the transparency of my PNG kept in HEIC?
Yes. HEIC stores an alpha channel, so transparent and semi-transparent areas stay as they are in the PNG.
Will text in screenshots stay sharp?
Mostly, but HEIC is lossy, so fine text and thin lines can soften at low quality. Keep the slider high, or keep PNG for screenshots that must stay pixel-perfect.
Are the pixels identical to the PNG after conversion?
No. PNG is lossless while HEIC compresses with loss, so pixel values change slightly even when the difference is hard to see.
Is converting PNG to HEIC free?
Yes, completely free. There is no account, subscription or watermark; just add your files and convert them.
Are my files uploaded anywhere?
Yes. This conversion runs on our servers, so your file is uploaded over an encrypted (HTTPS) connection, converted there and deleted as soon as the conversion finishes; the result is permanently deleted within 5 minutes after you download it, or 10 minutes after the conversion finishes if you never download it. Files are saved under a random code instead of their name, and processing is fully automated. EXIF and location data are not added to the output.
